Don't have huge experience, but if it helps, I'd always bought my cars outright and kept them for ages, with the exception of my D5, which I bought outright and then swapped after 3.5 years (for the Defender I now have). We also have a Model Y on a business lease. I financed a portion of the Defender using PCP which was the first time I've done so... I would like to keep it forever if the engine proves to be reliable, but because I wasn't sure what the world you look like in 4 years time (do ICE cars have a premium... are they banned from cities etc etc) I decided that the interest on the car and lost interest on savings was a price I was happy to pay to have a guaranteed value. Partly I was spooked (relieved?!) that we didn't buy the Tesla outright given their massive drop in value. Worst case... I want to keep the car and maybe pay a premium for keeping it by buying it at the end of the agreement.
The world feels generally a bit uncertain these days - doing the PCP gave one less moving part! |

I was in exactly the same boat. Having the safety net of being able to hand the thing back with controllable risk, after 4 completely unpredictable, but inevitably weird, transitionary ICE-EV years was very appealing.

Doesn't worry me too much. Nearly financed the BMW as the APR was 3.9% and I could see the base rate going to that, maybe above (lol didn't see 5.25% at all).
However the threat of you need to complete this, these and get it back to us today before 5.30pm was like... arghhh no.... As such we tend to keep our cars 5 to 6yrs. (My VW is coming up to 9yrs and slipped through the net) |

Have you thought about something like a 12 month /10,000 miles pa short term personal lease? Something like this from Leaseloco.
Click image to enlarge And a link to their website https://www.leaseloco.com/car-leasing/search I have nothing to do with that company and others are available and can be linked to from that webpage. I found it from the YouTube channel DefinitelyNotAGuru Pangea Green D250 90 HSE with Air Suspension, Off-road Pack, Towing Pack, Black Contrast roof , rear recovery eyes, Front bash plate, Classic flaps all round, extended wheel arch kit and a few bits from PowerfulUK Expel Clear Gloss PPF to come 2020 D240 1st Edition in Pangea Green with Acorn interior. Now gone - old faithful, no mechanical issues whatsoever ever but the leaks and rattles all over the place won’t be missed! Last edited by Tim in Scotland on 2nd Feb 2024 10:37am. I was also looking at lease options too. There can be some real bargains to be had. Especially when there are facelift models due soon and the manufacturers are trying to clear out stock. Not so much for Defenders at the moment, but BMW, Merc, Audi (Q5) have some very affordable deals.
Lease or Sale, I imagine come the end of 2034, the months before ICE is banned, there will be massive pressure to dump ICE inventory.. |
