Anyone else find third gear particularly "clunky/clicky" to engage? Is it "normal" after 5000 miles?
Mine just got worse after going to dealers for 3rd handbrake "repair" (failed). Getting paranoid about evil,  off German mechanics "spitting in the food" on test drives...

Normally it is the 2nd gear on the Puma. Maybe a problem in the syncro. You are approaching the state where you`ll want a total replacement from the flywheel back to the Tcase. Puma 110" SW

My second gear does this most of the time and third gear snatches a little sometimes. A new clutch is in my garage waiting to be fitted.

I do not think the grinding will be gone with a new clutch (IMHO) Puma 110" SW

My 3rd gear is hard to select when cold. Has been since new - now around 25k on the clock.
I just have to take my time for the first couple of changes and then it warms up. Doubt it's a clutch issue. One that started out as a 2.4 TDCi 110 XS + New Defender 110 First Edition |

No problem with mine in 3rd or any gear, but I'm told that I do leave changing till late, thinking about it 3rd gear is for quite a short time, straight into 4th normally.
Is there any corrilation between rpm and roughness? Ours had "bag of hammers" sound at 2300 to 260 rpm cured by emc upgrade under warranty. 130 Puma HCPU with an Artica 240LR Demountable Camper |

It's strange - no difference cold or warm, sometimes it happens (or not) at low rpm sometimes high. It makes it hard to know what to do. I guess I just have to wait to see if it gets worse (or better?) Trouble is I can't help thinking the of German mechanic knackered the gearbox when he had the car...  |

Let the dealer know.... then it is logged.... i had mine changed it took time for the dealer to except it tho...I went in 10 + times for them to acknowledge it good luck

I called Stratstones today to bookmine in for its 4th gearbox / clutch inspection / replacement episode... The numpty I spoke to claimed that they (Stratstones, main Land Rover dealer) had NEVER heard of any Puma gearbox / clutch problems... Second is a real pig to engage unless I go reallllly slow with the change, third just grinds, and now fourth is starting to get notchy... I emailed Dave Ashcroft a couple of weeks back, and he seems to think the root cause is a dragging clutch and or synchro issue... The Land Rover "service people" I have chatted with seem to think nowt is wrong.. Err, sorry to dissappoint chaps, but summat is fukt, and I want it sorting... mate i got mine replaced it took me time but now my g/box is great no stiff or notchy gears at all NEVER TAKE LIFE SERIOUSLY. NOBODY GETS OUT ALIVE ANYWAY |

As some of you, I have my clutch repleced. The new one is softer then the original. ALL the gears seems to engage more easy (for a Defender)...no more paranoia....

My old clutch died in the middle of the road. Defender full of load plus a ATV in the back.
I was going to the beach for a 7 days vacation....really nice. I tried to fit a Ford Transit clutch without success. After 10 long days my new clutch was installed and the gears automatically improved their engaging behavior. I dont know how long this clutch will live, but is definitely a different one.  |
