Spinning Studs + T-Case Oil Leak !! HELP !! (RESOLVED)
Hi Rovers,

Earlier today I was in the process of removing the rear propshaft to replace the UJs, while removing the propshaft from the T-Case I noticed the nuts were spinning Big Cry with the studs inside of the handbrake drum.

I managed to wedge a flat bit screw driver between the propshaft and the drum and was able to get the nuts off, so my concern now is how do I fix the spinning studs??

Can they be removed and replaced with new studs or can I use long bolts instead of the nuts and studs?

Oh btw it is a 1995 Defender 300tdi 130.

Hope you guys can guide me in the right direction to rectifying this issue.[/b]

Actually they are not studs, but UNF bolts. One side of the hex head is against the output flange and should hold it from spinning (at least that is the theory).
Better if you replace with exactly same bolts, but to do that you need to remove the output flange. While in the process you may inspect the seal land on the output flange and replace the output oil seal. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing

Dinnu whats up bro!

Ye I just noticed they were bolts instead of studs, I just think its a silly design but it is what it is lol.

I will borrow a 30mm socket from a neighbour and get to work.

I do believe the seal needs changing because I am seeing oil inside of there, also missing was the metal oil plate thingy that would direct the oil to the exterior of the drum, so since that was missing from the inside, the drum shoes were gunky.

I'll update after the madness!

So everything is back up, I changed the output shaft seal as well since there was noticeable oil on the drum shoes and inside of the drum. The metal shield that would direct the leaking oil outside the drum was not there initially.

Both the front and rear propshaft UJs were changed as well as new bolts and nuts to hold the shafts in place.

Truck feels 100% more solid on the road.... maybe that's because I was driving for a while in diff lock with the front shaft off for a few months now.

Couldn't agree with you more Bud....I think we take the internet for granted... you guys are miles and miles away and within minutes all my questions and issues are resolved.

That blows my mind Shocked

Especially being from the small island of Barbados where Defenders are a rarity it makes my life 10000x better knowing I can source all of my information and advice from you guys!

I think that plat that you refer to was removed on later transfer boxes (I do not know if all transfer boxes with direct entry cable). 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing
