Indian power company orders high-horsepower electric locomotives.
INDIA: Power generation company NTPC Ltd has ordered six electric locomotives from Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd for materials handling operations at the Lara Super Thermal Power Station in the Raigarh district of Chhattisgarh. Opened in 2019-20, the 1·6 GW power plant uses coal delivered by rail from the Mand Raigarh coalfield which is served a dedicated railway built for the Chhattisgarh East Railway special purpose vehicle by Ircon International. Announcing the contract on April 25, BHEL said it was the first time that 6 000 hp electric locomotives had been ordered in India for an industrial user. ‘As the world continues to explore new ways of limiting carbon emissions in the transportation sector, BHEL’s efforts in offering eco-friendly electric locomotives for industry will provide a relatively cleaner and alternative option to diesel-electric locomotives’, it explained. The locos are to be assembled at BHEL’s Jhansi facility, with an IGBT-based traction package developed by the company’s Bengaluru facility and traction motors from its Bhopal plant. BHEL has previously supplied more than 450 electric locomotives of various power ratings to Indian Railways. It supplied its first 6 000 hp WAG-9H to the national operator in September 2018. The Jhansi plant has capacity to build around 100 locos per year. ........................................................................................ So "greener" locomotives to deliver all of that coal to a power station. Probably used to make stuff for export that we end up buying while we get hammered on vehicle emissions over here. I don't think our crowd here see the big picture. There is a big push on electric cars, retrofitting insulation in older houses to use less fuel and a proposed ban on smoky coal and locally sourced peat for fuel. All well and good but we continue to import stuff from India, China and other countries with massive fossil fueled power stations. It seems a little two faced to me. It is hammering your own crowd to be so called "greener" while out sourcing production of the materials to other countries. I am sure a couple of big Indian or Chinese fossil fueled power stations pump out more Co2 than all of the cars in Ireland yet we are getting hammered to go "greener" and go electric or hybrid or battery powered cars. Not a word on the emissions produced while making these so called "greener" cars or how long the life span of the batteries are and what happens the batteries at end of life cycle. I read an article in the guardian where the writer was ranting that it was the corporations, big business and generally rich people and share holders that were causing climate change. They went on about how they (the writer of the article) were the only one pointing out this crucial fact.
I found it odd that the writer, this great visionary that could see the real facts of the situation, failed to mention the elephant in the room - over population. With all their anti rich people, anti capitalism vision of reality, they could not bring themselves to admit that the real threat to our planet and climate is our ever increasing population. The Guardian also seems fixated on allowing more migrants into our country. I am not a climate change denier, I consider myself more of a realist. I do believe in being more efficient and trying to reduce our actual carbon footprint, but we need to accept that our actions, however good they are, will not stop climate change happening whilst the under developed world keeps on developing. We need to start preparing for the changes with flood defences, water storage, increased food self sufficiency, increased energy self sufficiency and reducing our population size. We have learned from the recent situations with covid and Ukraine, just how fragile our current situation is. Much of Europe can't stop sending Putin money because they need his gas. Many food prices are going to increase because so much grain comes from Ukraine. And look at our reliance on China- how will we react when they invade Taiwan and they are a huge supplier of many of our goods - the cost of living crisis will be going up when that happens. The world is heading for an almighty s**t storm and the only question is will it take weeks, months, years or decades to arrive. A similar irony is mayors of cities like London encouraging people to come back to cities to work.
For years they have been moaning that the roads were clogged, that vehicles were polluting, that public transport was over stressed and needed vast tax payer investments. Also that there was insufficient homes for people , the prices were too high and building on green spaces was needed. During the pandemic people realised that a huge number of jobs do not require you to be in an office, in particular a city office, in fact office based businesses were performing better when people were not spending 2 or 3 hours a day travelling to and from work. All this meant that the roads were not clogged, pollution went right down, public transport had over capacity, people started to look to move out of cities and if more people moved out then prices would have started to drop. If that position was maintained then congestion charging would not be justifiable and people living in or visiting those cities could use their existing vehicles without penalties. So all the issues mayors were moaning about were being addressed. So why oh why are they encouraging people to come back to cities ? Could it be because it’s all about them, about money, about their power and their flawed non fact based ideology. It’s certainly not about the environment or the people they purport to serve. |

I don't know who said it, but rings very true:
Complaining about India and China's emissions, when we've outsourced so much of the production of the junk we buy to them, is like getting a lift to work from a colleague and then criticising them for their carbon footprint 
The real issues are: 1) Over consumption of crap - we buy so much single use  , disposable appliances and cars that are scrapped after 13.9 years;
2) Growing meat consumption - direct carbon / methane emissions, deforestation and use of nitrogen fertilisers [places like China and South America] (also - major source of antibiotic resistant infections - mark my words, if they think covid was bad, in the next 20 years people will routinely die from bacterial infections we could cure today); 3) Power generation - we need more renewables and proper grid storage; 4) Air travel - we fly far too much; and 5) Poorly insulated homes - as much as I dislike the insulate Briton idiots, the do have a point, rather than waste a load of money on heat pumps, why not cut the vat, provide subsidies and provide grants for insulation (PIR insulation of a useful thickness is outrageously expensive). But, motorists and their dirty cars are an easy target, so they'll just focus on making us get electric cars (which ironically will be charged by electricity largely generated using fossil fuels). With my tin foil hat on, the world is run by a small number of mega rich individuals, who's interests still align to the burning of fossil fuels and our over consumption of crap. Once climate change starts to impact them directly / or their business interests change, then we will see proper meaningful environmental policies. Or, Putin will wipe us from the face of the earth within the next six months and then we don't need to worry about any of this!! 2011 CSW XS 90 |

TFL have recently stated that the Low Emission Tax is not generating the amount of income that they were hoping for. So instead of congratulating people for using newer vehicles / EV’s or other forms of transport they are looking for other ways (re fines) to make up the revenue. Some roads now at certain times are now 5mph zones. 1, have you every tried to drive that slowly all the while keeping one eye on the speedo and one on the traffic ahead. 2, as a normal ICE car is driving well below its optimum ability then surprise surprise emissions go up, so expect charges to go up. And finally if every vehicle tomorrow driving through London was electric with electricity made with fairy dust we all know that the goal posts will be changed to a cost per mile and probably a toll for anyone crossing inside of the North and South Circular. |

I have always said, make the fuel cleaner, Nothing wrong with the basic combustion engine at all.

funny thing you say that, i have found two roads i use, have been wound back from 60 mph to 40 and another from 40 to 30. One main road over the other side of the industrial estate, there is chat about winding that one back from 60 to 40 too.
