Cutting Out
The Puma 110 has been on a trip with my old man to Scotland this week, and has been problematic to say the least.

It was fine on the journey up, but started causing havoc once there. He’s driven back home today and been plagued with it cutting out.

So, I’m hoping someone might be able to offer some advice. It’ll be off to Venture 4x4 sometime in the future, but in the meantime any ideas would be appreciated.

The vehicle has been randomly cutting out, and the head unit (double DIN) was doing odd things. My old man said there was a whiff of burning electrics in the car. The head unit was telling him to connect his phone for a while, before dying completely. Then it came back to life . . .

The worst thing was the cutting out. The engine would randomly die, whenever it felt like it was an inconvenient moment. There was no obvious cause, but it seemed that it was fine on long smooth straights. It was often after a sharp turn that the engine cut out. It would start up again without any problems.

For reference, it’s a 2012 XS with the 2.2. I serviced it a month ago.

The vehicle has a battery cut-off. The cutting out seemingly started after the cut-off key was removed when the dog was left in the car briefly.

So where to start looking? Loose earth lead? Dying ignition? Faulty cut-off?

Sadly, despite having had the vehicle since new and done less than 40k, it’s the most problematic of all our LRs. Charlie

Check battery terminals and the terminals on the new cutoff switch. I’d also be concerned that there are cheap versions of cutoff switches, which I’ve had problems with in the past when used for high current such as winches, and jump starters. If it is a regular issue a temporary bypass is simple test.

Shall start with that.

It’s not a new cut-off, it’s been on the vehicle for years. However, it’s pretty much never used as it’s a faff to remove the key without the BBUS going off. So I’m wondering if it has started to corrode internally or melt. Charlie
