Worth talking to https://demandengineering.co.uk/
You are correct in losing the centre pipe to help the breathing of the engine, especially with a tune. Think Usan Bolts running the 100 meters breathing in as much as he can, but then breathing out though a straw. TD5's are getting older now so chances are the CAT is doing nothing of any use and may actually cause back pressure, which in turn could warp the exhaust manifold depending on power and how hard you are running it. So a new SS system could be a good solution.........but, it depends on how long you are likely to keep the vehicle and if you live in a area that wants to charge you the pleasure of living in a free country, spot the irony. A free flow sports CAT is an option, but it is more pennies. I had my system built by Predator Styling in Wellington south of Taunton probably 7 years ago. Its a 2,5 SS pipe going into a cherry bomb then a three inch tailpipe. The Demand set up as a baffle to control the sound which mine doesn't. The upside (i have a IRB Stage one tune) is no turbo lag. Talk to Demand and discuss your requirements with an expert who may well work within your budget, but will also ensure you get the best solution that will compliment the money you are going to spend on the tune. all the best |

Talk to Demand
But you will need a box somewhere in the system or it will boom inside, and be really annoying on long drives. The cat removes loads of the sound, but a small box removes the boom |

When I first had my Td5, I removed the centre silencer. It made no difference. I feel removing the back box would be equally disappointing whilst the CAT is in situ.
When I removed the CAT, it started to sound lovely. I now have a full 3” straight through system without any silencers from Demand. I love it, but, in all honesty, it’s silly loud at 70mph. Interesting, thanks for the replies....
From what you are saying it sounds like De-cat, straight pipe, rear baffle is probably what I want in the end then. Shame the only non-servicable bit of my exhaust is the end section! I'm still hesitant on the difference between a £600 system from somewhere like demand vs £175 for less exotic pipes. Think I need to find a Landy show to listen to a few different options before shelling out |

What engine is it? I’ve got a 2.2 with the dpf still in place and a straight through exhaust after that. There was no noticeable increase in cabin noise at all which suggests that the dpf does all the muffling required. The only time it gets loud is if it is doing a dpf regen but it’s not crazy loud, just a deeper drone for a few seconds. It revs noticeably more freely with straight through exhaust.
Demand engineering seem to get good reviews, but you can but straight through sections fairly cheap elsewhere as well. |

If it helps, my remapped TD5 110 used to have a decat downpipe, a straight through midpipe and a factory silencer on the rear. It sounded good but had annoying drone between 55 and 70mph.
Last year the tailpipe succumbed to rust so I bit the bullet on a Demand system and am very happy with it. It's their normal 2.5 diameter with a decat downpipe and a single 'sports' silencer on the mid-pipe. There's no drone at motorway speeds, it's quiet at low revs with a nice turbo whistle and a lovely rumble when you put your foot down, but it's not obnoxiously loud. Dan at Demand was really helpful when ordering and happy to make any changes from the norm (I had the branding removed from the tailpipe). The welding is a work of art and it's got a warranty for life, I'd definitely recommend them 2005 Td5 110 Hardtop 1989 300Tdi 90 Soft top 1992 200Tdi 90 Truck cab with Land Cruiser axles |

The difference with a quality system and a cheap one is a few things.
The thickness, and quality of the stainless steel. Thin metal sounds cheap, and tinny. The quality of the flex section The smoothness, and quantity of the bends and radius’s Thickness, quality of the flanges/joints Quality of the mounting brackets. All depends on your preferences, expectations of keeping it, available funds. I’ve noticed difference when just swapping cheap to quality middle box replacement sections alone. |

Cheap stainless isn't worth the delivery cost!!! See here for more info https://www.defender2.net/forum/topic80149.html
The doubleS sections I fitted in 2015 were blistering and flaking with rust spots on the main tubes, even though the silencers were still shiny new. When I took them off to fit my new Demand exhaust I reckon I was maybe one or two years away from the tubes perforating. |

Another vote for Demand, running one of their centre and rear systems (along with a wiseman front pipe) on my m57 110. Excellent workmanship and easy to deal with. However I do find it a bit on the loud side on long journeys, hence in conversation with them to change the centre silencer, which should sort it.
