Hi everyone,
So after 3 months away, I noticed that my 90 is running cold: the max coolant temp is not going over 62-65C, even when driving around at full tilt in 40C ambient with the aircon on. Previously, the coolant would get up to 89C-91C and stay there the whole time. The workshop has replaced the thermostat, but when compared to other vehicles there, it's still running at least 10-15C cooler. What else should we be looking at? I have a Madman EMS, the built-in gauge is useless. --

The 2.4 has a Cylinder Head Temp Sensor, to the rear of the block nearest the bulkhead.
The CHT sensor is the temp sensor, when they fail it can cause the engine to run rich, use a bit more fuel as it appears cold(er) when it isn’t, to the EMS. Bear in mind, fresh coolant might create a bit of a temp reduction, mine dropped by a few degrees after I changed mine, possibly there may have been an air lock too if it hasn’t had the full coolant bleed procedure being followed. The latter here more unlikely. If you’ve gone from concentrate, over to pre mixed coolant then it’s more likely the temp dropped a little. In my case a good thing as it shows the coolant is doing its job better than the previous fill. Mind you, it’s not something that needs changing on it often as the OAT Coolant is very Long Life. You can do a resistance test on the wiring connector (simple 2 pole), but, I’m unsure what the resistance reading should read which would need to be looked up. This is presuming this is the issue. Not particularly expensive, but you really could do with the socket to do it with Approx £10. $W33T $0U7H3RN $UG4R 🇬🇧🏴🏴🏴🇮🇪🇺🇸⛽️🛢️⚙️🧰💪 |

they tested it in another Puma as well, it's working fine. Will ask them to check the CHT sensor, but I doubt it's that, as fuel consumption is the same. -- 2010 Defender Puma 90 + BAS remap + Alive IC + Slickshift + Ashcroft ATB rear 2015 Range Rover Sport V8 Supercharged Defender Puma Workshop Manual: https://bit.ly/2zZ1en9 Discovery 4 Workshop Manual: https://bit.ly/2zXrtKO Range Rover/Sport L320/L322/L494 Workshop Manual: https://bit.ly/2zc58JQ |

I had similar problem in Mondeo MK3 with 2.2 TDCi engine. It has two thermostats, first one for cooling water and second for oil to water cooler. The second one was bad. Is it same on Defender? "Drobek" = The Small One - Discovery 2, "Blufínek" = The Blue Thing - Defender 130, and for me at least Ford Mondeo

There is technically two in the plastic Y thermostat housing yes, I guess you could fit it wrong.

I see on the local ZA forum that quite a few people have substitued the OEM 88C thermostat with an 82C one (from D2 V8/FL2) to reduce chances of overheating. --

Update: Problem fixed!
Workshop found some rust/residue on the coolant sensor. It's been cleaned, and now runs at 87C. I guess that's the result of not driving it for 6 months. -- 2010 Defender Puma 90 + BAS remap + Alive IC + Slickshift + Ashcroft ATB rear 2015 Range Rover Sport V8 Supercharged Defender Puma Workshop Manual: https://bit.ly/2zZ1en9 Discovery 4 Workshop Manual: https://bit.ly/2zXrtKO Range Rover/Sport L320/L322/L494 Workshop Manual: https://bit.ly/2zc58JQ |
