2011 Defender 110 Puma 2.4 SW Baltic Blue

Transfer box chain?

Aaaaargh - so, the dealer has failed to fix my "hot handbrake drum" rattling for the third time

Just a thought - could it be the transfer box instead? Is the TB chain-driven and could it get slack when hot?

I know it is rattling at the prop-speed but the UJs seem fine and surely 3 handbrake drums can't be "wrong"?

could be one of a pile of things - try a different dealer if you can.

No it's not chain driven and I agree with BM - you need to find another dealer.

One more thing, it might be useful if you downloaded the latest version of the Microcat parts catalogue which available via the following thread http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic5282.html Steve.

Thanks to all - yes, I guess I have to find another dealer and convince them not to change the brake 3 times before looking for the real cause

Should not be that complicated. You can take the middle lid under the C. Box and drive with someone else trying to detect where the rattle comes. Or you are a few bolts and nuts away for removing the rear prop out and drive around. If you do so (diff-lock) you will hear a clear clonk but from the front output shaft which is normal (dog clutch).

Sometimes a high pitch click is caused by some small stones/sand between the rear prop mudshield and the diff casing.
