Yes, much better to save the old, wheezy, polluting, unreliable and inefficient engines that are currently in them

Yes far better to destroy, pollute and enslave other countries and their population to mine the resources necessary to make folks feel better about the thought of doing something for the environment

I have three series Land rovers and one defender and all of them will be EV converted as soon as the formula is perfected and the price drops. I’m watching it closely. Virtually all classic conversions are done using existing mounts and don’t require any modifications to the basic structure - so can be 100% reversed. Put the engine and box in a glass box on display if you like, but EV conversions mean that classic cars can be enjoyed by generations to come - rather than just for another 10-15 years.
Mechanically, it’s basically there now with a single Tesla drive unit sitting at 90-degrees and replacing the engine, gearbox, transfer box, exhaust, fuel and cooling systems. The cost of fitting the motor, inventor, control system and battery boxes is already cheaper than a rebuild engine, gearbox and ancillaries. The issue is that the batteries are an additional £8-20k depending on KWH required though that cost is dropping by the day while KWH capacity is simultaneously going up. Early adopters like these are great as they work out the kinks on the dime of the elite few that can afford the bill, so that by the time the price drops it’ll be a really robust solution. Better these early conversions are done by exceptionally high-end workshops than the early markets be flooded by backstreet budget conversions. Those can come later. |

I've said here and other places that I don't believe lithium batteries are the best solution in the long term. But nor are fossil fuels victimless. |
