What is the best way to access the reverse light switch on a 2.4 2008 Puma? My reverse light does not work but the fuse and bulb are both O.K. so I surmise that the switch is at fault. 1982 88" 2.25 diesel

Many opinions on this but I managed to access it from the top after removing the cubby box.
Was extremely fiddly. |

Managed mine from underneath, but think the neighbours learnt new words whilst I was doing it.

I recently did mine... Via the Cubby worked for me...
You will need a 'stubby' (short) 22mm spanner.... i modified an adjustable (spanner of last resort... of which I had a surprising number... it's also good to be reused. I had to take one from 21.5mm to 22... most open to around 20mm). Managed to get a standard 22mm to start it off... it's a pain as there are approaching 20 revolutions required to get it off, I think 18, after easing it undone it was possible to hand unwind the switch. Easy job overall and if you know your Reverse Light is OK then swap out the switch...

 Thank you for the comprehensive guide. I am more bothered about emptying the Mrs's cubby box, heaven knows what I will find in there  1982 88" 2.25 diesel

Although possible it's really awkward from underneath, since you can't even see it and it is difficult to reach. It really is easier from above.

I’m assuming a 22mm deep socket, 22mm ratchet spanner of perhaps a 22mm stubby ratchet spanner (if such a thing exists) are no use in this confined space, but thought I would ask.

+1. This is one of those jobs where there is an awkward way that needs nothing else disassembling, and an easy way which requires other things to be moved. My approach is always to start with the difficult way. I begin by adopting an awkward posture, and when I have strained a muscle, I try to lose some skin from a knuckle. I continue until I am sure the thing won't budge, and then switch to the easy slow way. This technique never fails. |

Just in the same situation today - light is not working but the bulb and holder are fine, all the fuses seem to be ok (but not sure which fuse is the specific one for the light )
It may be that the mech forget to re-connect this after the clutch changeout (hopefully an easy fix!) sadly I have a heater under the cubby so would be a royal pain to remove all the fittings to get to this easily .. so will try the brail method first ! I’ve lost count of the amount of times that I’ve taken stuff off or out just to get at something else only to refit due to having an item I need to buy to later fit or having to temporarily replace it only just to take it off yet again.
Pumas are very good at needing to have item A, removed just to access item B. Sometimes it’s even worse and multiple items need removing just to replace one thing. Water pump for example, fluid drain. Acc drive belt off, brake vac pump off then finally the water pump and repeat the re-installation. And that’s boring compared to the more complicated engine related internals etc which is out of my scope of knowledge and many people out there. There is very few jobs that are easy or non time consuming that’s for sure. If someone did the reverse light switch from underneath I’d imagine an endoscope kind of camera with lighting and screen would be useful or something similar, one of the few tools that I don’t have. Mirrors can be useful sometimes but working in reverse and with poor light that wouldn’t be much help I don’t think. I’ve had to take the cubby box out countless times too, best to make it so it is easy enough to take in and out. No Guts, No Glory. 🇬🇧🏴🏴🏴🇮🇪🇺🇸⛽️🛢️⚙️🧰💪 |
