I know exactly what you, I mean your friend has fitted to his defender. They appeared here in the UK in the 90's as a means of getting around the speed limiter which was starting to come in on all new HGV's as they where initially set at 100 kph. They were fitted between the gearbox sender unit and the Tachograph. At first they where a good idea but if you got stopped by the Police for speeding say at 70mph and your tachograph showed 60mph they soon twigged to them and it is illegal to tamper with the Tacho unit as it was a calibrated and sealed unit. With the price you quoted for the unit, would it not have been better to get a remap from a site sponsor which would also give you extra torque and power? Just my tuppence worth.

You're dead right - a remap would be my first choice too - trouble is, here in Germany any and every change to a vehicle (even just different pedal rubbers...) has to be immediately certified and passed by the TÜV (like an extreme MOT) or it is illegal - and there are no TÜV certificates for Defender remaps, so going to a German dealer is "double-jeopardy" with the warranty and the police
Consequently the box solution is the only one possible here since (if you don't break the speed limit) no-one will know.
