What is that box on the rear side window of some Defenders actually for?

To look rugged and help the driver convince him/herself that he/she would be an adventurer like the legendary Kenton Cool if it wasn't for the 9-to-5 job and 2.4 offspring. |

To be honest it looks like the most pointless accessory l've seen. Would you actually store anything in that box? Also it looks like it seriously restricts the view in the drivers side mirror.
I would save the near £800 cost and go on a last minute holiday to Greece instead. Click image to enlarge |

I got the expedition rack, ladder and gear carrier for £800 all in, certainly wouldn't have paid full LR price. Mine is a phev and there is nowhere to store the charging cables, real oversight so that's what mine will be used for.

Do you not have the false floor in the boot? Taken up by batteries l suppose.
ln that case at least you would have a reason for the gear box. |

I’ve a phev and put in the dog guard, I then attached 2x Sakura flip top boot organisers tie wrapped behind the outer two head rests - so they don’t obscure rear view, can put charging cables etc in there. Wish there was somewhere better to put jack though

Makes sense to put a bottle jack, handle, gloves and strap.
The sort of things that would be hidden under the floor and a PITA when stuck on the side of the road with a puncture and the car is loaded.... That self healing wrap would be a good idea after painting as i can imagine it being easily scratched down the lanes of say Cornwall and Devon. |

Is the side carrier strong enough for bottle jack etc?
