Have the same issue.
Best thing I could do is to ensure that the plastic hinge bush is in the correct orientation. When these bushes are viewed from the side, the slot where the hinge fits into is not centered, so fit the bushes such that the slot is towards the bulkhead, and then the bonnet is shut the slot would be on its highest position. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing 2012 90 CSW, 2.2TDCI, Santorini Black |

Not sure I can visualise how you’d do that? I thought the bushes could only fit in one position. Need to pop out and have a look!
There’s also adjustment on the main locking ‘plunger’ and two bump stops, which can provide quite a decent level of adjustment - probably only beneficial to you if the ‘rubbing’ is toward the front of the bonnet/wing. |

The rubbing is towards the rear sadly.
Will fiddle a bit more with the bushes. |

Just thinking aloud - maybe you could adjust the front end to increase the gap and relieve some pressure toward the rear? I had the opposite issue.
I have a relatively even (sealed) gap either side now. Click image to enlarge |

Got the bushes out and made sure they’re inserted properly……no improvement…..will buy some new genuine LR ones and see if that helps, as they look pretty worn and suspect there’s too much play in the slot.
If that doesn’t work….may have to enter the world of twisting the bonnet!!!!! |

Changing the bushes is easy and cheap so definitely worth doing anyway.
Can you lift the side of the closed bonnet with the existing ‘worn’ bushes? I suppose that the hinge brackets might be slightly bent/lower? Is it the same on both sides? Silly question/thought but has a previous owner shimmed the hinge to bonnet mating surface for any reason? I’d be wary of twisting the bonnet! |

Try a wing adjustment. From memory there is only one or maybe two small bolts that hold the wing top to the bulkhead and it is quite easy to loosen these and flex the wing top down slightly before retightening the bolt/s. At least that's how it was on my TDI.

I also tried the bonnet ‘twisting’ thing but perhaps I did not try enough as when I heard the crackling sounds I chickened out and stopped
My thought was if someone stepped on it, could have bent it. But surely not the case, as the wing would have created enough support. I checked the wing alignment (checked sill and alignment lower edge to bulkhead) but mine is fine there. In the end I just glued a piece of rubber under the bonnet at least remove metal to metal rubbing as it had already worn quite a bit into the aluminum during previous ownership Note: mine only rubs on passenger side. Driver side is perfect. Perhaps worth measuring and comparing distance from bottom of windscreen frame to top of wing. Never measured that, and unfortunately I am away for some time to give some measurements. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing 2012 90 CSW, 2.2TDCI, Santorini Black |

Ha, may well end up with a bit of rubber stripping and be done with it.......but for now have ordered some new bushings and will see if that helps.

Hello Drevil
I had a similar issue when I bought mine. OS was OK NS Bonnet was touching the wing top checker plate installed. I swapped out the Rubber Barrel Hinges on the Bonnet but suspected that this was not the issue, mine had covered 6K at this stage, No improvement was gained. My Bonnet closed and engaged with the Bonnet Release Mechanism correctly. Wings looked in alignment also, and whilst I considered possible adjustment here, this is I believe somewhat limited. I was looking for around 4-5mm on the NS to visually align to the OS, so with all else looking good I flexed the Bonnet in-situ by placing a piece of 6mm nylon sheet under the opened bonnet along the NS area that needed lifting and slowly pushed down on the 'nose' of the Bonnet to encourage it to assume a lifted position... I was cautious not to dent the Nose of the Bonnet, but the Steel Puma Bonnet is better in this respects than its predecessor. I probably gained 2-3mm as you get spring back when opening again but on further gentle encouragement to flex upwards by repositioning the nylon packing I got a matching gap NS to OS. Non-damaging packing and slow applied force to gentle gain the correction worked for me. Click image to enlarge SKIP https://www.defender2.net/forum/topic83242.html |

What seal did you use for that? Something on my list of mods to do! |

Off the bay of E

Andddddd….. sorted
Click image to enlarge Old bushes were well and truly shot and needed cutting off. New LR ones in and guess what….no more bonnet sat on the wings. Ok the alignment isn’t perfect, but I am not aiming for Rolls level coachwork here. Next to clear up the scuffs on the wings and on to the next task…… Anyone got any tips for adjusting the central sprung bonnet catch? Needs winding in but is stuck fast. Cheers Tom |

That’s good news
Apologies if I’m stating the obvious - but are you loosening the large locknut or just trying to turn the flat blade screwdriver slot in the central sprung bonnet catch? Once I loosened the locknut mine was easy to adjust. |
