LT230 Woes
Morning all,

I’m struggling with a persistent leak on my LT230.

It’s a fully tricked out box, but has leaked since day one . . .

I had the box pulled before Christmas and Venture 4x4 found the input seal to be leaking. They replaced the seal, but the LT230 was still leaking.

They’ve pulled it again today and, guess what, the input is leaking again.

It’s 100% not the R380. That’s bone dry.

Any ideas as to why the LT230’s input seal keeps failing?

My suspicions would be a damaged shaft (seal land area), damaged/worn bearings on LT230 input gear, damaged bearings in gearbox, defective seals, or misalignment between the gearbox and LT230.

Is it possible that the seal is being damaged when the transfer box is being fitted? It is easy to damage the seal if you don't use the special long alignment studs.

I would hope the LT230 bearings are fine, as it’s a rebuilt box.

The gearbox is quiet, so I’m guessing the bearings are OK. The old LT230 didn’t leak from the input.

It could be duff seals or poor fitting . . .

The shaft looks OK too.

I’m very confused Laughing

The small hole for the dowel in the back of the R380 is slightly out of round. Is there a chance this is the problem?

No idea how long it’s been like that for.

Yes, double and triple checked. The dowels are present.

Everything looks and feels totally normal, except for this dowel hole being slightly oval.

I know dowels can cause problems, but I once had someone fit an LT230 for me and they forgot both dowels! That didn’t leak from the input . . .

Our first port of call is going to be a new seal and put it all back together as perfectly as possible. If it still leaks then, we’ll know it’s likely this hole is the problem and a new R380 will be needed Big Cry Charlie

I can't see the damaged dowel hole causing this, once aligned and torqued up the boxes can't really move in relation to each other anyway.

I'd agree with blackwolf that the seal may be getting damaged during the installation. The oil seal collar looks ok, but may have been installed a little far towards the R380, perhaps it's not making sufficient contact with the input seal on the LT230? I wouldn't assume that the input bearings have been replaced, it depends who rebuilt the box.... It would be worth whipping the input cover off and investigating IMO. Is there any discernible play to the input gear? 1985 127 V8 Build Thread

That’s my thinking. It’s all fairly rigid once aligned.

So you reckon the LT230’s input seal is not in deep enough, or the R380’s output seal?

It was rebuilt by one of the big names in LR gearboxes. They’ve been very accommodating, but until the issue is resolved I think it’s fairer to keep them nameless on the open thread. Charlie

The seal collar is pressed onto the mainshaft of the R380 and the groove in the collar is to enable fitment and removal with the special LR tool. AFAIK the groove should be installed such that the innermost vertical face is inline with the rear face of the R380 (difficult to explain sorry). From your photo it looks as though the collar has be installed a bit further inboard and it is conceivable that the oil seal isn't making sufficient contact with the collar to seal effectively.

Another thought, could the LT230 have been overfilled? 1985 127 V8 Build Thread

Hmmm OK. I shall look into that, thanks Thumbs Up

It has a high capacity sump fitted, so you end up with a total of something like 3.5L to the fill plug. Charlie

After replacing the input seal and refitting the LT230, I’ve done 125 miles.

At the moment, we are leak free!

As said by blackwolf first off, it was probably either dodgy or damaged seals causing the issue. Fingers crossed it stays dry . . . Charlie

The leak has returned . . .

I’ve placed an order for a Stage 1 R380 with Winchester as it seems there must be something out of alignment. The LT230 has gone through three genuine input seals, so it can’t just be a seal issue. Charlie

Hi Charlie

I had this problem a long time ago with a leak on my reconditioned TB, as you described, in kept leaking out and as you have done replacing the seals, we eventually found the leak, the leak was between the outer part of the seal and the TB casing Rolling Eyes , took some time to find, so another TB to replace it from the supplier Very Happy 1996 Golf Blue 300Tdi 110 Pick up.

I did wonder if that was a possibility, but the leak the last two times was definitely running down from the inner lip of the input seal.

If it continues after a new R380, then the LT230 is going to have to go back.

The R380 has 160,000 miles on it now. It’s perfectly possible there is some wear or damage to the shaft or collar. We know one of the dowel holes is damaged. Charlie
