Well... in the spirit of DEF2, I thought it may be useful to others if I close this thread off properly!!!
So to recap. Defender was running GREAT! Lots of smooth power, starts first time every time when COLD, normal fuel consumption etc... BUT - would not start without loads of throttle and revs when warm/hot. If it was left 15 mins or more it would start fine, but when switching off a hot engine (like getting fuel in the petrol station) and re-starting within just a couple of minutes it was a pain to get it going again. I had even taken it to a LR specialist who failed to correctly diagnose... Having read on another forum (Ford Transit forum IIRC) that a weeping fuel-rail PRV can cause this by weeping fuel when hot (seems reasonable) I changed the PRV again. No change to symptoms. I then read (also on a Transit forum IIRC) that the VCV (they called it a "suction valve") can stick when hot (hmmm really? but never mind), I bit the bullet and ordered another new genuine Denso one. Fitted this morning, did the Pilot Relearn again.... and BAM - FIXED! So a VCV can cause this. My last VCV (also genuine Denso, correct part #) obviously had a fault. I'm delighted! Whilst the EGR, and a few other parts were changed in the fault-finding process, at least I have lots of spares in the garage now! I'll clean my original EGR and keep it on the shelf ![]() One last thing. If you want to replace your VCV, a 5mm Park Tools "P Handle Hex Wrench" makes it so easy! Cyclists will know the brand because they do tools for cycles... The "ball" on the long end means you don't need to hit the 5mm hex head dead centre...plus the length gives you reasonable access around the various pipes and wires... ![]() Click image to enlarge Defender "Puma" 2.4 110 County Utility (possibly the last of the 2.4's) |
