In normal circumstances on a Puma, the clutch fails before the slave starts leaking. Or is not the case? Most complaints I read are failed clutches... 2nd is leaking rear crankshaft seal. If I am correct, then I would be tempted to save the hassle of replacing it at 6months. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing

The only slave cylinder i can recall leaking was Grenadier's but that was a brand new one and probably a defect. One would normally replace the slave with the clutch for convenience, but in this case I think I'll leave it in place. Unless I get a good reason not to... Roaming around 🇳🇴🇨ðŸ‡

Mine went on a 2.2 puma after 70k miles - the clutch was ok but the slave cylinder failed.
I was lucky as the vehicle was under warranty and on examination the clutch had some loose springs so they changed the clutch, drive shaft and slave all at the same time. Just fitted a new clutch and master, slave and drive shaft as an upgrade for overlanding some time in the not so distant future. Personally I wouldn't bother if it is that new, it is pot luck. You could be really unlucky and it fails the day after you put it all back together, but if you put a new one in you could be really unlucky and that also fails the following day.
Generally Puma slave cylinders are not particularly unreliable. The first time I changed my clutch I fitted a new one, the second time I didn't bother. That cylinder (and for that matter the standard genuine parts clutch I fitted at the time) have now done 120k miles, about the same distance that the four previous clutches did in total. I do need to put another new one in soon (I've been saying that for quite some time now) and will be changing the s/c this time, since at 120k it has done enough for me to feel it owes me nothing. If nothing else my vehicle provides an insight into how the standard clutch has improved: the first 130k miles got through four clutches, the last 120k miles has been done on one. The next clutch (already waiting to go in) will be a 4x4 Transit one. |

^^^^ Just like my Td5... when I changed the flywheel, the crank oil seal was bone dry, but I thought "I'll change it as I'm in here"

The standard clutch in my Jan 2015 build was quite good until 56,000 miles when a spring fell out. Mitigating circumstances are that twice in those 6 years I accidentally stalled the truck - the second time I simply lifted my foot from the clutch pedal thinking it was in neutral, when it wasn't. User error for sure. The clutch was "different" and after that a spring fell out within 18 months. This strikes me as unusual and has me steered away from another LR spec clutch. The SACHS 3000.950.727 "dgardel special" is next.
Come to Norway and we can have a clutch party weekend with steaks and adult libations Roaming around 🇳🇴🇨🇠Last edited by Angus_Beef on 7th Feb 2022 7:19pm. Edited 1 time in total |

If it’s not that old and you don’t think it has an issue, I wouldn’t see any requirement to routinely change it. Ride like you stole it!!
If I’m not on a bike it’s because only a 4x4 will do… 2011 2.4 Puma 90 HT |
