Fuel Economy on 2.4 tdci.
What sort of fuel economy are we all getting on our 2.4 tdci’s?

I have a 2011, 2.4, 110 and it seems to be getting worse on fuel. I know you don’t expect a defender to be as frugal as a church mouse, but……..

I de-catted it last summer and it made big difference. It seems to have dropped back. I used to get about 29-30 up to a couple of years ago.

I am getting about 24-25 mpg at the moment. It has 87,000 on the clock.

With the astronomical price of fuel, I was wondering if it was there was anything physically I could do to the car to get it back to where it was?

Map; maf replacement or remap?

Sensible thoughts welcomed.

It runs nice and there is nothing obvious. It seemed slightly flat last time I was out with the trailer on.

Sounds a bit low to me; don't think I've ever been below 30mpg but then I don't tow or do lots of 70mpg stints on the motorway Richard

Your numbers don't look completely crazy. I have found that depending on many variables, fuel economy can vary wildly.
My fuel economy is significantly worse on autobahns, where there is a lot of wind, heat, traffic, etc. My worst fuel economy was 13.2 L/100 in Sweden with rain, cold temps, and high winds. My best was 7.8 on Norwegian roads at 80 kph, sheltered by trees, with a moderate temperature and windows down.

Weather (especially wind and temperature) are difficult to overcome. But as an example, a very good result was driving from CH to NO this October, temps in the mid 20s, AC not needed, 235/85 Nokian LT2s at 4.5 bar rear, 2.5 bar front, and the truck loaded to max GVWR. I averaged 9.36L/100 at 110 kph with a BAS 170 tune, and regular diesel. In this case, I suspect the lowered ride height from the max payload offset the increased weight.

I try my best to keep the truck consistent even though it is used in a wide variety of situations and here is what I come up with:

Grease prop UJ’s, check tyre pressures and if you don’t already start using Millers diesel additive permanently too. $W33T $0U7H3RN $UG4R

not sure how much difference it makes but I do wear ballet shoes ( Mr. Green )

I generally work on 500 miles to a tank, anything less and I feel cheated. Anything more I'm happy.
from memory the most I've managed was 615 miles - 40mpg.
BUT - thats trying to be frugal. Thumbs Up

using BP ultimate. Thumbs Up

600 miles to a tank!!!! wow. I'm normally getting about 420 or so.

Mine's also taken a dip on mpg over the last couple of months. It's going in for an oil change/service next week, so will be interetsting to see if anything obvious is wrong.

I will recheck my tyre pressures ahead of that anyway, but on reading the above am wondering if it's from leaving hte aircon on over the last couple of months to assist in keeping everything demisted.

As to air-con, do people find that using it makes much difference to the mpg in their defender?
In some of my older cars it used to make a noticeable difference, but my last couple of cars (bmw 330d and 5.0 Range rover) it made practically no difference at all - certainly nothing that you could identify consistently. So I'd got into the habit of just using it most of the time.

In case relevant, mine's a 2.2, but imagine the questions/issues here are common to the 2.4.

If your air con compressor is driven off the engine v pulley or serpentine belt you should notice a difference in economy, a modern vehicle air con compressor is electric so much more efficient Ride like you stole it!!
If I’m not on a bike it’s because only a 4x4 will do…

All of mine were driven off the pulleys.

That said, the range rover was rather thirsty anyway (12-15mpg) so, proportionately at least, the aircon wasn't really significant!

I work on 400 miles to the tank as an average, less if towing, and less if a long motorway (or similar road where sustained higher speeds can be maintained) run is involved.

That's a remapped DC usually running around 2.75 tonnes GVW with 255/85 mud tyres and a roofrack.

What really hurts is that at 152 pence per litre it is now £100 to fill the tank, so we've reached the 25p per mile point. Shocked

Yes, it really does start to show the real cost of it all.

That said, my L322 range rover was 100litres of unleaded to fill and I only got 220-240 miles to a tank. I miss a few things about that car, but not the fuel!!!

Hello

Over the 6 years or so with ours it seems to do between 29 / 35 with an average of around 32mpg

best I think was around 38 mpg.

Seems to do the same full of camping stuff / bike etc than it does empty.

Its a 110 remapped.

Most of my driving is A / B Roads a though big European trips also (at 75 / 80) it does around 26... but on the toll roads abroad you want to get to places.

In the UK I tend to cruise at 60mph even on the motorways.
