12V ignition - no power on fuel shut off on early 90
12V ignition - no power on fuel shut off on early 90

For the restoration of my 1988 90, I thought I do not need to test the wiring (anyhow unsure how to properly test it off the vehicle) as everything was working as should before I stopped it for the restoration.

Today I started testing, at least for basic function to start the engine, i.e supply 12V to the fuel shut off, and supply to the starter solenoid. But already a major showstopper as when I switch the ignition, I did not get any warning lights Shocked.. I was expecting the low oil pressure and the battery no charge indicator to light up. I thought simple, probably I connected the ignition switch incorrectly.

Checked the ignition switch, and I think I did mistakenly swapped the White/Orange with the White/Red wire... but that is not the issue... as the switched 12V is the White wire. That is connected correctly. I checked if I have 12V just at the ignition switch White wire, and there is 12V (0V when ignition switched off). But still 0V on the White wire at the fuel shut off valve Crying or Very sad

So did a few more checks:
All fuses that should get power when the ignition is switched on, are on 12V when the ignition is on. Checked wiper motor.. and that is working fine.
Checked behind the cigarette lighter. There found a white wire. That has 12V when ignition is on.
Checked the white wire at the instrument warning light, no 12V found there.

If I supply 12V at the white wire on the instrument cluster warning light, then I hear the fuel shut off valve clicking.

Checked the white wire on the engine harness. That has continuity. Since the fuel shut off valve powers on when I supply 12V on the instrument cluster warning light white wire, then I believe that the connection between main harness and engine harness is also fine.

Here is a picture of the Hynes manual I was using to debug the problem and which should be correct for 1988. I marked the voltages with ignition on.

I am afraid that there is a connection somewhere in the main harness between the engine multiplug and the fuse box that is not ok. At least that is what I am thinking.

If anyone has an idea, I would appreciate the input.. any input. as the only way forward that I am seeing right now is that I have to strip half the dash to find the problem Big Cry

In hindsight, I just remember that there is an inline fuse, same as shown below. it is hanging in the lower dash, behind the binnacle. No idea what it is for. I did not check it as I did not see it in the electrical schematic. Cannot remember the wire colour, but could have been white. Will first check that tomorrow evening.

So what I thought is an inline fuse (looks exactly as pictured above) is the Ignition Light resistor, so no joy there.
I started stripping the dash to get a bit more access.. but the wiring runs into the loom, and for a proper fix it needs to be completely stripped.
I have decided not to as it seems only the fuel shut off and the supply on the instrument cluster warning lights was affected, so I rigged a wire to supply that branch.
