I can not believe no comments on this.
I am not the only owner of a puma chassis that is suffering from corrosion. Be very interested on any thoughts. Unusual for this forum to be slow in coming forward. I replaced once a cross member for a friend. He wanted the chassis to look as unmolested as possible so he purchased just the crossmember without any extensions. To improve the life of the replacement crossmember he also ordered it galvanized, partnumber KVB000290G. Quality wise was very good. Fit was very good, and galvanizing was very good as well.
To get proper access to weld, we decided to remove the tub. Prior to welding, we removed as little as possible from the galvanizing zinc layer. To have better access to welding, removed the top reinforcing plates, part of RTC3354. The lower reinforcing plates come with the basic crossmember. I opted to fabricate the top reinforcement plates myself, from 2mm zinc plated sheet steel, folded, punched etch to make them exact replica of the original. You would also need to make 2 small squarish plates that weld on the bottom side. If you are handy with the welder, then it is not a difficult job. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing 2012 90 CSW, 2.2TDCI, Santorini Black |

i fitted one to my 130 last year, tub off when i did it but have done them in situ, just access on top is really bad.
i bought an ebay one, HD galvanised. quality of material was good, glav is good, overall dims good too. what was bad was that the threads for the tow hitch didnt line up with the holes in the outer edge! lots of filing later! threads also needed cleaning out. i bought one with extensions to make welding on easier. As James remarked, I also had to re tap M16 the tow hitch threads. I did not bother with the other threds.
Need also to install the M6 rivnuts (need to be hexagonal shape) for the mudflaps and 2x M8 for the rear step if you have one. This is the one he got: https://www.paddockspares.com/kvb000290-td...nised.html Only difference to the original: 1. The outriggers, right behind the rear wheels, the internal plates on the original are spot welded, these are mig welded, so you can see 3 welds. 2. The folds when fabricating the crossmember have a somewhat larger radius. But hard to detect.. need a sharp eye. Edit: Now I recall that the slots to fit the body mounting rail did not line up with the captive nuts on the rail. The crossmember came with an early TD5 rail, and I was using the original rail as on the later TD5 and TDCI. Just a little bit of filing needed on the outer 2 slotted holes. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing 2012 90 CSW, 2.2TDCI, Santorini Black |

Yours is not the only one! Mine has a small bit of rust on the bottom of the rear cross-member but I am hoping once it warms up I will be able to weld it up myself. Cheers Don. |

I am hoping you mean warm up as no workshop? Rather than to aid the welding? Cheers

Jst "I am hoping you mean warm up as no workshop? Rather than to aid the welding?"
Yes I need the weather to warm up; I have very low blood pressure and the colder weather makes it hard for me to work outside! I would love to have a workshop/garage but MrsH wanted an extension so the garage went west! Cheers Don. |

The crossmembers made by Pressbreak (black sheep off road) are pretty legendary.... sadly I believe he's stepped away from the land rover seen entirely from what I last saw. I purchased one from him a few years back when he was just doing postal orders, and like you say it's fantastic quality, had it fitted by a welder friend! |
