United Kingdom 2004 Defender 90 Td5 CSW Santorini Black
CAI Tachometer Problem
I’ve had a CAI Td5 tacho fitted for a few months. It initially needed the switches at the back fiddling with to get it to read correctly. It was then perfect until two weeks back.

After swapping the rotary oil filter housing, I cranked the engine over a few times to get oil into the new filter without starting up.

When I went to drive off in the 90 later on, I noticed the tacho was way off. It was reading high and the indicated idle would read higher on the gauge every time I stopped. Eventually, I pulled over and had a poke around the back of the gauge. It then started reading correctly for the rest of the journey and my next journey.

My most recent journey saw the gauge play up again. Please see the photos attached to see what’s happening. When I was doing 70mph (should be around 2,600rpm with my tyres/gears) it was reading off the gauge where 6,000rpm would be!

Any ideas on the cause and fix? Is it going to be a new gauge job?

I’ve emailed CAI, and await a response.

Cheers!
