Old Forces Service Records
Aware that a few guys on here are ex military (or anyone else that has successfully done similar research) and wondered if anyone had any insight on the following few queries please.......

Have seen various internet databases, etc but most charge and with no real feedback its hard to see if its value for money or even worthwhile or other / better options??

(1) I have an old relative that served in WW1, I know his regiment and service number and have found limited info re; his medal records, etc. - how do I find his actual service record, can you contact the regiment direct r is this not the 'done thing' ??

(2) old relative that served in India, WW2 - lots of conflicting info re; the actual regiment he served in and can't find any relevant info......

(3) another WW2 relative that was a Dunkirk veteran, family whispers suggest quite a heroic escape but no idea of his regiment or any other details.....

Main issue with all of this research is that the people that would have known ae now no longer around to ask and the info is simply lost - I thought it would be nice for the current & future family member sto be more aware of the exact info

Thanks for any pointers

Hi 90 Dreamer
My mrs did www.gov.uk to get a copy of military service records, then apply for (someone who is deceased records) it does costs 30 quid regardless of how much they can find, as a lot of the first ww1 records were destroyed during ww2 apparently .

You will need their full name, dob and a copy of there death cert, unless the person was born more than 116 years ago.

She did my grandads record for ww2 and got a lot of info back, but it can take them a while to send it all back. ...

Good luck Steve

You could try contacting the regimental museum as well.

I've seen similar requests dealt with via Freedom of Information (FOI) requests. The benefit being they are free, or they refer you to the correct persons who can provide the information at a "reasonable" cost.

Websites like "Findmypast" and "Lives of the First World War" are free, the latter one if the soldier was killed in WW1. otherwise Ancestry hold the National Archives but they charge although you can ususally get a 30 day trial. Some od the WW! forums have people with access to Ancestry who will do look ups for you. Jeff
