On a TD5 Defender anyway, makes it a easier but you dont have to. Just requires a lot of wiggling aroud to fit it in. Especially with the hoses.

I don't know which model you have,
but on the TDCI Puma's you can change the intercooler without touching the aircon. Mine was done earlier this year, and it looked fairly straightforward. |

I've done it twice. It's tight but will go with enough perseverance and wiggling.
