United Kingdom 2007 Defender 110 Puma 2.4 SW Corris Grey
Recommend upgrade specialist esp soundproofing & suspens
My 2007-plate 110 Puma is now 14 years old, 90-odd thousand miles, had it from new. Still love it to bits but it's always true that - of course - longer motorway trips are not its forte and my wife is not massively keen on driving it much.

I've been considering selling it and looking at alternatives, but without success. I have a deposit in for a Grenadier but I feel I'm unlikely to take it up as it's likely to be more expensive than I initially imagined, once specced up.

Why spend a fortune on a new vehicle when I already have what I want? I own it outright, it's not costing me much to run. It's actually appreciating in value. Why not address the issues, spend a few thousand improving and upgrading the Defender?

So my question to those on the forum is: can you give me recommendations on who to approach for work? I'm based in south Cumbria so somewhere in the north would be easier, but not a huge deal, we have family in the midlands etc.

What I think I'm looking for is:
- General tarting-up for a 14-yr-old Defender with the usual rust and superficial issues from living outside. (Not to concours standard but giving it another 10 years or so).
- Soundproofing work
- Suspension upgrades for better day-to-day ride

I'm inclined to leave the engine and transmission as is, although a re-map might be considered.

Any thoughts on specialists to approach? Thanks!

If your 110 is completely standard

then it can be made so much better with sound proofing, better suspension, comfier seats and a good remap. you can even turn it into auto and add cruise control plus apple car play.

all that will still be much cheaper than a grenadier, and your defender will still hold its value Mr. Green Thumbs Up

Try Alpine Automotive in Halifax
or Ian at IRB Developments. 2008 Santorini Black 110 XS USW (Sold)

Sounds like a plan! Basically what I did with our Puma. It's still a Defender but much better than standard.

Highly recommend Cult4x4 for all sorts of work. James

Or if you are even slightly handy, do things yourself. I’m going through my defender at the moment with all the usual upgrades with this forum and YouTube as my guide. Quite enjoying the process. I’m no mechanic.

I was in this place last year. I had convinced myself that I needed something with a little more comfort for long trips and that my 2008 110 was starting to show it's age. I bought a new D300 110, which is a fantastic vehicle, but just didn't get on with it or generally having a new car .. so sold it after a few months.

Thankfully I hadn't yet sold my old trusty 110 and have gone back to driving that and couldn't be happier. I've been sorting out a few things that I'd been putting off like the transfer box and clutch and since have been tidying it up and soundproofing where I can. Wheels have now been re-powder coated. Christmas delivered a short shifter Shift-R which has made a huge difference to the feel of the gearbox.

I can't see myself getting rid of her now. I've looked on the other side and didn't like it!

Plenty of people to help do all the bits for you, IRB, Audiofile, Mahker to name a few .. but I'd do as much as possible yourself if you're that was inclined and let the experts to the messy bits!

Brakes next for me and then possibly a BMW engine conversion when mine runs out of life .. that's one for the experts!

As mentioned by Pilsburypie, if you have the time and some (frankly basic) skills, DIY is the way to go. Based on what you are talking about doing, you could save thousands on labour. Insulation from Dynamat or Silent Coat plus some Dodo matting, is in the low hundreds for a 110, vs £2k+ when including labour. Full suspension set up (four new dampers, four new springs, new bushes, new steering damper and - if needed - new ARB), from £1k, but £2k+ if fitted. Likewise treating the rust yourself etc etc. So DIY might save you £2-2.5k on having it done for you, which not only gives you rich personal reward but enough money to add some other creature comforts such as new seats (£1k/pr), better stereo/speakers (£500), remap (£500), cruise control (£200) etc, within a similar budget. Monsieur Le Grenadier

I've not been everywhere, but it's on my list.....

Yep. That’s my ethos. If you have loads of money and no time or inclination, get one of the big companies to do it.

If like me you don’t mind spending on your pride and joy, but need every pound to count, do it yourself. You’ll do the same job for half the price and then have money for the never ending extras!
