TD5 Injector Life Span
Curious really, but perhaps one of you good gents have a better idea of this than I do.

How long do TD5 injectors last?

There is no service schedule as far as I know, but do they wear? Should they be serviced at some point in their life?

How do you tell if the injectors are no longer working at their best?

As some of you may know Miffy is no spring chicken Wink She has covered nearly 125k miles on her original injectors. Hence the thought process above...

There is nothing in particular that I am concerned about, they are noisier than they used to be for sure, but working and obviously I have no idea about their spray pattern. Could be dribbling in to the cylinders like a toothless hound...

My Disco2 has now done around 220k miles on the originals, they've been out once for new seals (at about 210k miles) and I have no reason to think that there is anything wrong with them. I imagine that they are worn compared to new ones, but they seem to work fine,

Mine have been removed at least twice , once for a new head and once when I had the seals replaced.
So far I am on 234k and like Blackwolf seems to run fine. A bit of smoke when I boot it - but probably down to the turbo ? 1999 Defender TD5 110

Balls, I was obviously on the Christmas spirits a little early this morning. Miffy is close to 225k miles not 125k miles. Rolling Eyes

Good grief, pass the gin...

My Td5 is on 162k and I have no plans to refurbish the injectors. I run premium diesel through it, in the vague hope of keeping the pump, lines, and injectors clean. Charlie

192k still original. Thumbs Up
They can become a bit slack overtime. Excess smoke is one of the symptoms. But probably only one. Not shutting correctly so the fuel timing is slightly out. They do wear. I’m a convert to millers eco max.

Yes it is the "slackness" that I am pondering about, it would certainly account for the more clackerty sound of the injectors over the last 100k miles. As you have all said they are still working and there is nothing that I am desperately worried about. Curious is all.

Could they be running better? Probably. I have been tempted with a second set out of a breaker with less miles on them, but that'd be rolling the dice on someone else's maintenance acumen Rolling Eyes

It could be a matter of age but the MPG has dropped a bit in those last 100k miles, but not dramatically. She has a tune, but just a mild one. She does push out a little smoke, but nothing drastic. At the end of the day I like to have a solid well running engine and I do not mind tweaking things to keep the old girl running as well as she can do.

Anyway, these engines are not getting any younger and I am not in a rush to find an engine to swap in anytime soon Rolling Eyes

Actually I do have a related question....

I remember there being a service memo regarding the setting up of injector adjustment. Something like the book says 1 turn, but the recommendation was 1.5 turns.

Does anyone know why this was?

IIRC It was increased to reduce chances of them being too tight, therefore rocking injector and cracking the internal diesel gallery that injectors sit through, or so the guy on Ebay who welds cracked ones up says.

I certainly wouldn’t be putting in second hand unless a total emergency!! Your not going to see any real benefit. I’d be saving for a new set Whistle roughly a couple of grand plus coding . Or you could buy a 2nd hand engine and totally rebuild it over time…… something I’ve thought about but not acted on yet Whistle
