So I used your tactic as well as others and I appear to be getting somewhere

I ended up leaving it for a day or two and taking it on a few drives and there is still an area of float or a lock (not a notchyness like typical symptoms of a dead box) and so I suppose I’ll just carry on with bleeding it until it has fully gone.

Edit: will be calling my “go-to” specialist and see what they have to say and if nothing comes to it I’ll either be rebuilding the new box with the old box or sending the unit back. (I quite like the idea of harvesting what’s good from the old to the new tho) 4.0 V8 Defender 90

Sounds more like a duff 'new' box than a bleeding problem to me.
