Tdci Concentric Slave Failure - Why?
Morning all,

Been slowly working my way through my clutch/output shaft refit (I know, been a while, but working around the hours of a friend of mine who’s a snow plough driver and with all the snow, he’s been super busy). Earlier in the week we were bleeding the clutch using the two person method, all seemingly going well, and then suddenly fluid trickled out of the hole in the bottom of the bell housing. We stopped immediately. We noticed that the slave adaptor had slightly come out of the bell housing as well. We pushed it back into place and gently retried (thinking the leak might have been due to this) and fluid came out again. We stopped. We had almost no pressure when bleeding for an age, and then suddenly it began to feel solid - just as the leak appeared. An almost simultaneous moment.

So yesterday we dismantled the bell housing once again and took a look inside. The housing was basically dry, as was the clutch plate and cover. The trickle had left a very small pool in the base of the bell housing. The adaptor was firmly in place, u clip properly fixed. The concentric slave had a small residue of fluid around the spring, but the face and body were dry.

We cleaned everything up and did a small test. With both master cap on and adaptor tap closed, I did one push on the clutch. There was a little resistance my end. My mate watched the slave and said fluid squirted directly from it.

So my questions:

1. Was the likely culprit the adaptor not being firmly seated and the fluid squirting out on inspection just some residual fluid that was sitting in/around the slave?

2. Or was the adaptor forced out of its position due to a problem that has also broken the seal on the slave?

If number one, how can we verify that the slave hasn’t failed?
If number two, clearly I’ll buy a new slave, but what might have caused it? Wouldn’t want to refit everything only for it to happen again.

Looking to tackle this on the 8th Big Cry so there’s a bit of time for some really experienced answers….

As the TDCi slave is mounted inside the bell housing, for the cost of 'not a lot' it is worthwhile replacing the slave cylinder when replacing the clutch. It is a lot of hassle to have to separate the gearbox from the engine at a future date (and with the quality of the original slave cylinders that wont be too much further into the future) just to replace the slave. Same goes for the crankshaft rear seal.
As to why yours is leaking, I'll pass on that one.

Thanks PiesandChips. Sorry, something I didn’t clarify, the slave and adaptor were new and fitted at the same time as the new clutch. Complete agree it makes sense to do both. Hence the concern as to why it would fail (or if it indeed has failed) or if I’m misreading the problem. Monsieur Le Grenadier
