Talk me into double din…..
Ok, I’m up for improving the standard alpine head unit. I want dab and Apple car play. Also a reversing camera

Now in my book the double din when done well looks fantastic. But it looks like one hell of a faff to do for yourself. Who has done this recently themselves? How hard was it for someone reasonably handy? How much did it all cost all said and done for the new dash panel and a decent double head unit that can do what I want? Also, did you have to mount switches on the side panel? Looks like many do. Can look a bit clumsy.

My other go to easy option is the pioneer AVH 7200DAB. £560 + £50 for camera + £20 for wiring adapter as I have a 2014 110. So that’s my go to base price.

Your thoughts are appreciated

The best thing I ever did to my Defender.
Time consuming
Awkward..
Made own switch extensions.

But so rewarding. 2 years on and still loving it.
Cheap reversing camera topped it off

Agreed. It does look good. So apart from your head unit, how much did the double din dash plastic cost? How long did it take you?

I looked at a lot of the DD conversions.
I genuinely believe the better option is with the integrated clock and air vents… It makes for a much nicer fit. ( some kits split and are fitted as 2 pieces)
I chose gloss back. Fits in very well.
Full kit was from a company called Evolve @ £125. Can’t find them anymore???
You get a “side panel” for the extra switches. I cut off the strange “hole” it comes with…again looks so much more fitting.
You can buy the switch loom extensions.. I made mine up.
If I recall took me a good two days.
Worth it thou… I understand the workings 👍
You need a very specific head unit size..space is limited
You need confidence too…cutting a hole in your dash.
Plenty of guides on the net

How deep can you go on the head unit? The pioneer double din are 17cm deep.

Like others I did my original conversion before the all in one piece of trim was available and you had to cut the clock part from the dash...

I never thought it looked right. So when the full double din kits were available I went for that.

Its all a bit tight... I have RCA cables for Amps, Camera cable, Mic cable, USB cable all coming out of the back. To be honest I will when I get round to it take it all out, heat up and bend / cut the bracket behind slightly to get it to sit flush.

At the end of the day these were never deigned to have this unit in so its still great, I just want it fitting better.

As others, it makes the car a bit more updated, DAB +, Waze or Google maps, Reversing camera, Read your messages and you can talk to it... Android or Apple car play, I can even watch films.

This is my set up, as I say I want to make it better but you get the idea..

Reversing camera and extra reversing lamp attached to number plate plinth using existing holes As I don't want to drill the car, Its slightly off set on the screen, but you can see the tow bar.. so I know where the back is...
