Hello
It seems a few on here have multiple cars and then maybe an EV along with them.
I'm talking with my electrician friend who has solar on his house and looking at this for my workshop roof, I could have a good run of panels.
So then when the next run around car needs changing (currently a petrol Mini Cooper S) we will probably look at a Small EV...
My issue though, apart from this will be a smaller car than our others, If I can charge it for Free.. do you almost begrudge filling up the others and using them.. I would think if I get an EV then its a slippery slope to maybe changing the others
As someone else mentioned though holidays are our big road trips...Over to Annecy and Europe can be 2500 mile round trip. that's some planning I guess (all doable) but I never feel I need to worry with a petrol / diesel car? Quick 5 minute stop and I'm good for another 450 /500 miles? that's with a packed car, roof box and 4 bikes on the back... I know the EV's are getting better range, I somehow thing this would require a fair few stops? and in peak summer with the supply (electric points be available?). Then if you add a twin axel caravan in the mix my range is down to 300 / 350 what would an EV do that only does 300 anyway? 150 /200 ?
Its inevitable we will change our ways you see more and more already and at some point will will no doubt have one but I do feel it will be a run-around car for mainly the short (less than 50 miles) journeys, until the infrastructure builds up?

I’m about to have a Zappi home charger installed (other smart charger makes are available!) that will divert electricity generated by my solar panels ( I have a standard 3.9kwhr system) to the charger and into the cars battery. There are a few systems that do similar however I do have to be generating more than 1.6kwh for diversion to happen. That means that at this time of year your are unlikely to get that without a huge solar panel array. Also the Govt incentive of up to £300 to fit a home charger ends next March/April, although up here in Scotland we get a further up to £250 grant (and an interest free loan if required) from the Energy Saving Trust to install the charger. All up including grants it’s costing me £700 to get a charger with 5m tethered cable + hub to work the solar/mains diversion installed by an approved installer. If you know what you are doing or have a “tame” electrician then you can do it yourself but unless he’s a registered electrician to install home chargers you won’t get the U.K. Govt incentive up to £300. Also if you don’t already have a solar array or wind turbine then the Feed In Tariff (where your electricity supplier pays you for 50% of your generation every quarter) isn’t worth having as it’s now (IIRC) only 1p/kWh exported, I get 19p as I got it installed before the FITs were reduced. My neighbour across the road installed her panels when they were paying 42p/kWh but then panels were very very expensive, but the feed in tariff is fixed for the life of the panels. Just a pity that my feed in tariff isn’t increasing at a similar rate to the cost of energy I have to pay for……….
