Puma 2.4 smoke on cold start
My 2010 2.4 puma has begun smoking quite a lot when starting from cold first thing. It lasts for about 30 seconds and is worse when the air temperature is colder. The smoke is thick greyish and there is sometimes a misfire as well. There are lots of threads with other people having the same problem but no real answers as too what is causing it. What do people think?

A little bit of white smoke is normal, it's deliberately rich.
It's also richer than usual because the battery voltage is low so the injectors don't work as well. A weak battery will cause more white smoke.

Other things that cause excessive white smoke are the EGR system being dodgy and I believe that the VCV can cause issues like that too. Certainly misfires would come from there.

Glow plugs possibly they’re a sub standard quality in the tdcaye. Don’t buy the Berus they’re rubbish.

I had the same issue and it turned out that my engine is gone. It also used to burn lots of oil. Do you loose engine oil? Defender 110 SW MY2011 2.4tdci decat, no EGR

I am thinking of trying the vcv next. The egr is deleted with remap and also blanked off. The battery is in good condition. It’s had a new set of glow plugs as I found 2 had failed, they were Berus tho. It’s not using any oil or water.
Lots of people seem to have the same problem and say it’s normal for them to smoke on startup but it isn’t normal, mine never use to and I regularly use 2 pumas at work which are the same age but with 100 000 and 120 000 miles with absolutely no smoke or missfire

They seem variable, but mine has blown clouds of white smoke on a properly cold start from day one in 2011.

Jonno do you ever get a missfire/rough idle or just smoke?

Mine generally lives in a garage and i notice no smoke at all turning the key immediately without letting the glow plug light extinguish, if I park outside on a cold night and forget to do the glow plug light thing I get some smoke and a few seconds of rough running, if I let the glow plug light extinguish its fine. I would therefore suggest before you assume the worst the glow plugs would be worth checking. DEFENDER 90 TDCI XS,

I hope everyone is well and your land rovers make you happy

Glow plugs were my first thought and after stripping the intake manifold to get to them I found 2 had failed, so pleased with my finding I replaced all 4 and reassembled but the next morning it had made no difference 😩

Is the glow plug relay ok? I’ve replaced a few of them along with shorted glow plugs.

I’ve just put a volt meter on the glow plugs to check the supply and it’s only showing about 10v whereas the battery shows 12.3 is this normal?

Mine never had smoke, now it’s exactly as you describe. Quite a list of checks to do, it seems, what does everyone think is the best order?

Note, fuel usage normal. Oil usage normal. MAF sensor fault, not yet rectified. Lots of oil sprayed in/around the MAP. Monsieur Le Grenadier

I've not been everywhere, but it's on my list.....

I will follow, mine has just the same. White smoke on a cold start, no oil consumption or any other alarming signals. Engine runs smoothly. Had:

Defender 110 TD5 - 2000 - 120.000
Have:

Not sure why this thread didn't turn up in my search before I posted this:

https://www.defender2.net/forum/topic80900.html

In it you'll see I found a bit of corrosion around the lug and stud connection between the harness and the wire leading to the glow plugs. After cleaning it the resistance dropped from 11Ω to 1.4Ω. While 11Ω is still enough to trigger a continuity beep in a Fluke meter it can't hurt to have a look at this, maybe yours is worse?

If you have a DMM it's a simple as a resistance check between the stud and any of the glow plugs, I used sharp probes on freshly cleaned surfaces. Solved the bowel problem, working on the consonants...
