Any Thoughts on TerraFirma Winch?
Hi D2N:

I’m in the USA and looking at winch options for my 130. I have a TF001AC Bumper. Anyone have any thoughts on the current TF series of winches? I’m also looking at Warn for good or bad. I know the UK has a few great brands but need something with some decent US distribution in case of service issues. I’m open to any and all thoughts/suggestions.

thanks!

I cannot think they will be a bad winch. They look to be based upon the last of the Superwinch winches before they stopped trading (I believe anyway, could be wrong). Wouldn't be surprised if Terrafirma bought the designs.

Going to stick my old man know-it-all hat on... As with all tools and equipment the longevity of the gear entirely depends on how it is used or abused and more importantly how often it is serviced.

I wouldn't be surprised at all if the vast majority of winches have never been serviced and a good amount ever used... Rolling Eyes

Just so you know because it is important following the above. I have never had a premium winch (Warn, Superwinch, etc), although lusted after one from time to time, as they are silly money for the occasional user. Instead I have owned Champion, T-max and I believe I have a no-name winch at the moment.

1) The T-max I sold with a bumper,
2) The Champion succumbed to the incredible forces of ice expanding inside the housings post a series of water crossings and overnight during a particularly cold winter. I had been using the winch a fair amount and it was warm throughout so I believe that whilst crossing a river the sudden cooling of the winch caused it to suck in water through its seals. Since this I have always had a cover for the winch to keep the worst of the weather and water away from the winch whilst crossing water.
3) The no-name winch is now eight years old and works as it should. It has been repainted once and serviced between 12-18 months. It doesn't take long to do with simple tools. No it is not fancy, nor pretty but it does the job and as of yet has only let me down once and that was my fault as I failed to keep the wander lead plug connectors clean and corrosion free. Whatever you decide to buy make sure it is of high enough rating for your vehicle, use it sympathetically, service regularly and it will last many many years. Thumbs Up

I shall get off my soap box now Rolling Eyes

I would be amazed if the TF winch is anything other than a generic Far East made winch badged for them. Not saying it's a bad winch, just that it's nothing extra special and you will probably find a local brand offering something very similar that'll be simpler come warranty or spares time. 2007 110 TDCi Station Wagon XS
