Denso are a reputable manufacturer of vehicle parts, PF Jones sell a Denso VCV for the 2.4 for £48 inc vat.

Make sure you drain the fuel filter of any water on a regular basis as the vcv does not like water and that can be the cause of failure, noting you stated that the garages do not seem to have done all the work they said so the fuel filter may not have been changed or drained as regularly as required.

Kenya 2007 Defender 110 Puma 2.4 SW Blenheim Silver
Mine pulled similar on me recently. After a uneventful 200 mile drive, I parked. 4 hours later, starts OK, and whilst loading stuff into car, it switches off. Start up again, starts fine, and then dies. I had to keep the revs up above 1500 to keep it from dying. Unnerving drive back home, where when slowing for bumps, or in traffic, to avoid a stall, it was right foot on accelerator keeping revs above 2500, plonk into neutral, left foot playing the brakes, and clutch til past the slowdown or obstacle, then gear on, merry on! Kept revs between 1800 and 3000 whilst driving , else engine would switch off, and sometimes would struggle to start back up again. Not fun at all. All the while hooked up to FORSCAN, no faults, no errors.
Tried driving with the MAF disconnected - no change. Tried disconnecting the clutch sensor - no change. Cleaned out the MAP, no change.

So.... next day... with NO change, still would start, sometimes immediately, sometimes was a very hard start, several tries... it would then idle a bit, a bit erratically, then gurgle, drop RPMs and die... die... did the following , checking for change each time:

- checked all the fuses under drivers seat, swapped relays around, bent pins to sit properly: no change
- checked battery, all clamed well, checked cable to mega fuse, OK: no change
- changed the MAF: no change
- checked earthing points: no change
- injectors are new, so didnt touch or change those, but checked for backleak, and they seemed fine.
- Cooling system was fine, as had it plugged in all the while, and it didnt matter whether engine was warm or cold. No coolant loss.
- checked for water in diesel filter, none. Didnt seem dirty or murky either. Was planning to change it anyway, but didnt get round to that.

So after doing all of the above, one by one, and starting the car each time, and no change...

... I changed the Fuel Pressure Sensor on the front side of the rail.

VOILA: idles fine, no erratics, no dying after a while, runs perfectly!

Thought I'd nailed it, was ecstatic... Did a pump learn and Pilot relearn. All splendid.

So I thought I'd put back the just replaced "bad" culprit sensor to ensure that was indeed the problem , expecting it to go back to rough idle, and die...
And it doesnt... everythings running fine??!!??! Baffling
Wonder if @blackwolf could explain what the hecks happening?

So went on a 100 mile drive, running the old "bad" sensor, and carrying the "good" sensor that had solved the problem as a hot standby, just in case... with a few drive stops in between... no issues, no problems!

Dunno, cant explain it... but driving around now still, with the original culprit "problem" sensor on the rail, and the "good" other one in the toolbox...

Incidentally, other things I was going to check / do, which I didnt get round too when the changed Fuel Rail pressure sensor seemed to have solved it, are:
- re-clean/sand-down/refit all earthing points securely
- replace the VCV
- replace diesel filter (in case of dirty diesel , as is common here)
- replace fuel rail pressure release valve (at bulkhead side of the rail)
- replace the CHT sensor
- replace accelerator pedal (throttle)
- painfully go through the whole harness and checking wire by wire for any kinks or breaks
- check/replace stop light switches (though completely dont understand how why that would affect anything)
- replace the CAM sensor (though dont think that would affect the symptoms showing, clutching at straws)

It’s likely the VCV was the most likely to have been the issue on that list.

Have you cleaned the MAF and MAP sensor, the latter especially can get gunked up.
