Mirror arm courtesy light wiring
I’m going to replace my mirror arms again as the paint is peeling, so I though about some billet ones with the courtesy lights. Where the next place to pick up the power so they come on when the car is locked and unlocked?

I’d worked that bit out! But there are a few feeds and I don’t want them to come on if I just need to stop and read a map in the dark. I want to pick up on the courtesy feed which I think comes via the alarm module? Any ideas which colour set that is?

Maybe using the interior light will work....

According to the electrical schematic for an MY12 (yours should not be far off), the interior lamp had one 12V supply, and 2 grounds.

The 2 grounds correspond to the switch position.

One ground is permanently connected.
The other ground (as I understand it) is done by the alarm ECU.

So if you connect to C0355-3 and C0355-1 , i.e. permanent 12V on the courtesy lights and then connect their ground to the ground that is connected to the Alarm ECU, I think it should work. The courtesy lights will switch on as soon as you unlock the door. They will remain on for a few seconds after closing the door (following the interior light of course). If you flip the switch on the interior lamp for map reading, the courtesy lights will not switch on.

The courtesy light are LEDs so they should not load the alarm ground ... and it is designed to take 3 interior lamps (total 30W)... so with 2 on a 90, should have current to spare.

Solid purple is the 12V permanent supply.

Having had similar 'puddle lights' on one of our cars once I've always wondered about the value of having them under the mirror arms. Won't the door cast a big shadow just where you want the light? On our car, the lights were in the bottom of the doors which meant they illuminated the area that your foot was going down onto. Cheers, Guy.

Dinnu's suggestion will work, the puddle lights will come one when the alarm ECU activates the interior lamps but not when the switch on an interior lamp unit is used, which is (I think) what the OP wants).

The question of the value of a puddle light on the mirror arm is a good one. If you are worried about pulling up and getting out into a puddle you need a light on the bottom of the door (not easy on a Defender due to the lack of space). If you are worried about walking up to the vehicle and stepping in a puddle as you approach (presumably one that wasn't there when you parked, because you would remember filling your shoes) the the mirror arms would be fine.

I have to say that I tend to regard mirror-arm puddle lights as a gimmick and a way of advertising that you have the world's most expensive mirror arms! Rolling with laughter

It would be great to get some feedback on the mirror arm lights if the OP does fit them.

You are right Blackwolf, and sorry glpinxit, I only thought about getting into the Defender and not getting out. Technically you should know where you have just parked.

Perhaps another solution would be to fit lights under the sills, or somewhere behind the bulkhead outrigger (added protection against mud). But not sure for how long they would be free of mud. But could also be a good motive to keep the underside clean.

Personally I would not drill through the door to get the wiring for the mirror arms. But that is just me. Maybe plenty have done it when fitting heated mirrors. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing

An option I considered (briefly) was to fit an upgraded LED version of the Defender rear number plate light to the inside of the door facing downwards in a position where it fits just ahead of the seatbox when the door is shut. The disadvantage is that it would intrude onto the footwell space somewhat, the advantages are firstly that it is ideally placed to stop you jumping out into a cowpat or puddle, and secondly it will stay clean and not get covered in mud.

In the end I fitted two side-facing flood-beam worklights to my roof-rack, one each side, above the second row doors. These do everything a puddle light does and much, much more besides.
