Possibly the diameter is to allow for the voltage drop to the starter more etc if there is no under bonnet battery.

When I spoke to driver at the demonstration day he said batteries would be under the 2nd row seats, none in the engine bay. 1995 Defender 110 CSW

The points I was making are 1. The central storage bin should have a lid regardless of whether its lockable or not like most other manufacturers. That lid is often used as an armrest by passenger and driver. 2. Security of items in the vehicle can be achieved simply by locking the vehicle itself without the need to separately lock the central bin.
