Just check its had all the neessary recalls done and then change oil every 6k miles and you'll be fine! (don't read too much! Whistle )

Great point on the recalls - I'll call the main dealer where it's had the majority of its servicing and see if they can help me with the info...

I'm considering asking the mechanic who looks after our cars (other car is a FL2) to give her a once-over - just for peace of mind - I'm conscious with many problems, catching them early can mean a much quicker, cheaper repair than if things fester - I have a clunk on gear changes sometimes as the new gear engages, it could be me being too quick on the clutch, but it's new to me at the moment and you worry there's more than I understand or can see... (I'll relax eventually!!!)

Welcome to defender ownership - I also purchased a 2008 XS a few months ago after putting it off for years.
Another vouch here for the removable wheel and lockable boss, aside from it giving me much more peace of mind it's also to do with not wanting to cart around a huge steering lock - Partly for space but mainly because if I'm in an accident I don't want a giant lump of metal flying around the cabin. I also think that I'd just avoid using it occasionally due to the faff whereas the wheel comes off and the lockable boss is in in 10 seconds now that I'm used to it.

Only advice i would give is don't rely on one security measure..there are ways around all security measures so have layers designed to slow them down or make them move on!The optimil QR and lock are great but i personally would not rely on that system alone!

Having a qr boss and lock in situ is a statement to the thief that you have thought about security and they might move on to an easier target.

Bowl of Petunias... is one of Douglas Adams' brilliant little side stories in the Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YCsfHVM5x_I) - I don't know either, I just had to make up a username and for some reason it was the first thing that came to mind!!!

Thank you for weighing in - I agree with the removable wheel that combined with the boss locking cap puts off the opportunist ***** pretty well - out of interest what do you do with the removed wheel? (we went to see the new Bond film yesterday - very good btw, and I wondered exactly what I'd do with a steering wheel going into a cinema.. Laughing ).

I'm thinking a Disklok as a quick measure, mainly as after just buying the car I'd rather not drop £600 ish on a new boss, wheel and boss lock, but I'm also not comfortable leaving it parked up in public with nothing visible - I was the 4th Defender in eyeshot in the car park yesterday, one had a disklok, one a stoplock and one nothing - as I've read many times, make sure yours isn't the easiest one they can have...

in the short term i would laminate a list of security measures and stick it on your drivers window.

stating security measures on this truck include

X 3 cut of switches
drowned in smart water
1 battery security switch
x two trackers
x 2 immobilisers
obd lock
fuel line lock
clutch lock
x 2 others for you to find!

Might just mess with their heads !and save you a broken window and ignition lock.

If i had any of those in place i would not mention them.

I have a smaller steering wheel than standard fitted (Startech)
and picked up a Surplus Bag of the right size...still on the look out
for a 'quality' carry bag but this has worked well so far...
