LED Bulbs in side/indicator lamps - MOT fail?
I know this is now the case in head lights, and according to the thread on here it was also synonymous with being an axe murderer or similar, but is the same true for side lights? I’ve had a search but can’t seem to throw anything up.

If so, what are the most factory looking versions of LED side and indicators? I am going to upgrade the headlights and want a similar white light to match on the side lights but don’t like the look at pretty much everything I’ve seen so far.

There is nothing the Testers' Manual at present about LED bulbs in sidelights or indeed any light units other than headlights, whereas there is a specific check for LED bulbs in headlights.

Although technically not allowed, I do not believe that having LED bulbs in side- or tail-light units designed for incandescent bulbs would result in an MOT failure under the current rules.

Thanks Blackwolf. Any suggestions on which bulbs to use, are some better than other in terms of light output/direction or are they much of a muchness?

Thanks
Col

I can't really answer that, but what I can say is that when I bought my highly illegal but fantastically good LED "H4" headlight bulbs from Classic Car LEDs I bought the equivalent LED bulbs for the sidelights and brake/tail, reverse, and rear fog. I have been extremely happy with them, they work well, look good, and complement the headlights well in terms of colour.

I didn't bother with the indicators since personally I don't like LED indicators at all, plus there would likely be issues with my trailers.

Last question I promise! Did you go for warm white or bright white?

The same would apply to the side repeaters as headlights. If they are sold as ‘E’ marked LED units then they are legal.
(And is present on the lenses).

If an LED cluster is fitted to a standard side repeater housing that isn’t legal.

The latter may still pass an MOT though but isn’t ideal. $W33T $0U7H3RN $UG4R

I went with the cool brilliant white since the warm white looks daft with LED headlights. I don't know what it will look like when the MOT comes, since it will either get the H4 candles back or it will get Truck-lites. I haven't decided yet.
