First proper inspection and first leak question
Hi gang,

I am new to this forum. Already owning a couple of series 2a, I decided to chance a defender 110 Puma (2009 2.4TDCI) as a daily driver (YOLO).

I have had the car for 4 days and spent more time on it today to come up w a list of jobs that need doing.

I did notice that the underbody was much wetter than when I saw and bought the car, and certainly more than I’d like. It’s def leaking more than my current LR series are… not a great start.

I am not familiar w the complexity of the defender engine train yet (and am still waiting for paddocks to deliver the Haynes manual). In the meantime I wouldn’t mind getting your views on how wet that looks to you?

The sump is not that leaky but has some oil weeping slightly, the oil filter casing is quite wet, the transfer box is back from a complete overhaul and looks dry as a baby’s butt, the gearbox shows quite a bit of oil and I circled a slight drip.
And finally there’s quite a bit of a drip coming from that line that I highlighted w the arrow.

This is a real mystery to me as it appears to be an electrical line running from the engine to the rear of the chassis (it disappears halfway behind the mid seat section). Any idea what that is and why oil would be coming out of it / running along it?

I am due to take it to my local LR Indy, but he can’t see me until end of next week - and the wait is killing me.

(In the meantime, I will perform the oil and filters service myself this week end - changing the sump plug / oil filter casing seal etc… and see if that sorte that weeping out)

Thank you for your help on this

While you are waiting for Haynes, have a look at the real thing https://onedrive.live.com/?authkey=%21ALkd...9C85C7C171

Difficult to trace an oil leak once the oil has contaminated everything.
Best is to have it washed and dried.
Assuming leak is from engine, start the engine, and see where the oil appears first.
If there is no oil leak, take it for a very short spin, and then check again.

Smelling the oil might help determine if it is engine oil, or diesel fuel. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing

Hi Rivarama,

Have you seen any oil leaking from the top of the engine, under the plastic covers etc?

Hi Jonesie.
I had a look and the top of the engine has quite of bit of oil. Could it be the rocker cover seal that’s gone? The car only has 40k miles… feels early to pack up no?

Also, having wiped the gearbox and sump last night to see where the leak came from, it now looks like the gearbox has a slight leak too. Is there a way to check gearbox oil level/top it up like in the old series? Can seem to find it in the manual.

Thanks

Should answer the gearbox oil volume question. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing

Sorry I haven’t replied earlier.

Sounds like it could be injector oil seals… Series I 86" Petrol orig side valve (daily hack)

Thanks for your input guys, spot on.
A couple of injectors seals were indeed shot. The injectors were full of gunk that had accumulated overtime as a result. I have no idea how the MOT missed that leak… anyway, all cleaned out now. The rust on the fuel rail got sorted and everything is now back in and not leaking.
The cam cover gasket was changed by the same token as it was a bit wet.
All seems dry for now.
The engine needs a good clean now w degreaser and some light running water and I will inspect the rest this week.

Glad you have sorted it.
The seals don’t seem to last more than 40,000 ish miles and if you use your right foot they last even less.
Think you’ll be fine now.
Good luck.
