This is a Td5 engine?
Sounds like a dry bearing, possibly the alternator or vacuum pump (they are are coupled to each other). Wonder if the screeching sound at 0:18 is the result of the first sound at 0:10? 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing 2012 90 CSW, 2.2TDCI, Santorini Black |

I am pretty sure the screeching at the end of the video is a leaky exhaust manifold.
The sound, by my estimation is coming from the transmission. But could be wrong. It's not there all the time. Mainly when gearing down. Yes, TD5 engine. |

The screech at the latter end of your vid is warped exhaust manifold.
Look for black soot marks at both ends, and try the nuts on the manifold, I bet they are loose, snap off, or are possibly missing. |

The noise around 10 seconds in sounds very like the noise that my Disco2 started making, intermittently at first then all the time. Quite alarming, and it went away when I fitted a new (pre-owned) gearbox and transfer box, sadly for the noise to be replaced by a substantial oil leak from - I think - the t-box which I still need to sort out.
I attributed the to a failed layshaft bearing in the R380, but have subsequently found when stripping the transfer box to overhaul and refit to sort out the leak mentioned above that the intermediate shaft bearings in the transfer box were just starting to fail, and one had clearly just started spinning on the shaft. It is possible that this may have been the source of the noise, but I would be surprised (it sounded worse). I have not stripped the R380 at this time, though it is on the "to do" list simply to see if I can find the source of the coffee-grinder" noise. I am assuming, by the way, that the clutch was in at the time of the noise at the 10 second mark. If the clutch was out, it could be the spigot or release bearings. |

The noise is as the clutch comes out (ie peddle coming up)

Had that noise when letting off the clutch and engine rpm is a bit high, and not only on Defenders. I attributed the noise to vibration on the friction plate as it is being clamped between the pressure plate and the flywheel.

I don't know. But I am assuming that this truck has not been touched since built.
So if it this - new flywheel - and might as well replace the clutch/friction plate/etc...while at it? |

Ok, you mean the clutch is coming in not out. An "out" clutch is disengaged (pedal on floor), an "in" clutch is engaged (foot off pedal). If you are operating the clutch at the time of the noise it may be a clutch noise or a gearbox bearing-related noise. |

Yes, the noise happens after the shift as I am bringing the peddle back up. Bringing the clutch "in" |

Yes - firewall end has them missing. Studs are still there. I take it I just can't "put new bolts on". They whole thing needs to come off and be flattened/machined. |

Mate, that bearing noise around the 10 sec mark is the throw out bearing on the clutch fork imo
I don't have a Defender and I don't even know how the clutches are designed on them but I'm an old mechanic, and as soon as I heard it, I knew. Well, I'd bet most of my old tools on it. If it only makes that noise on change downs at high speed and not while your idling or taking off in 1st gear you may have a pretty used input bearing as well? It could also be the spiggot bearing being dry but I reckon by the sound of it, it sounds like the throw out bearing. Don't take my word for it though because you really need to be there to hear it and drive it. Good luck though. |

Clutch release bearing is failing…. Mine has been doing this for several years but only at low speeds. I have put maybe 60,000 kms on it with it making that noise. It has not become worse which is why I have done nothing about it. If it get worse time to do the clutch
