Hello,
Is there such a thing as an ultimate service, the sort of thing you see on Wheeler Dealers? If so, what am I asking for and where should I go (in the South East)? When I've asked my local garages they're "so you want an A Service?” No, I want you to sort out any problems, "What problem have you got?" I don't know, I'm not a mechanic. They're not engaging in what I'm after. I've neglected the services and care on my car and I want to address that and reset things. It makes weird noises it never used to but I don't know what they are or even if they're normal. For peace of mind and the lifespan of my car I need help. What do I do? Or am I barking up the wrong tree and I should get on with it? Thanks. |

1st things 1st, get all the oils ( engine ,gearbox, transfer box, diffs) and filters changed.
2nd replace anything that’s worn and dangerous. All this will be done by a decent specialist anyway. After that it’s just a case of working through any other faults. My td5 just had a service and it’s come back back with loads of faults, that I will work through over time, but the basic car is sound. There’s no point replacing stuff if it’s ok anyway, just a waste of time and money. 2002 td5 90 county hardtop |

As Bluest says you could be spending a small fortune for some things which may not be necessary. I think given the circumstances I would be asking for a major service (as per LR spec) and a thorough check over - as if you were taking it overland to North Africa. I would change the aux drive belts and cam belt as a precaution, renew brake fluid and coolant.

I’m assuming your car is a defender (What model / year is it ) if so then.
Give Chris at CSK automotive a call, he is a site sponsor and member on here as well. He will give good advice and can go over the vehicle to give you a report on what needs to be done and what can be done to reset your truck to a good level within your budget. https://www.cskautomotive.co.uk/the-land-rover-specialists/ As others have said as a minimum you should change Engine oil and filter. Air filter Fuel filter Front and rear diff oil Transfer box oil Gearbox oil Check and top up swivels / grease or oil. Newer vehicles have grease, older have oil. Grease prop UJ’s and slider. Clean maf and map sensor. Plus potentially Replace coolant. Replace brake clutch and power steering fluids Things to be checked will be brake pads, suspension components, drive train components and steering components. These will be checked when you have MOTs , but best checked and replaced before that as they are safety components and will improve vehicle handling in normal use if bushes etc need replacing. This can all add up to quite a hefty bill, so having someone like csk go over your defender first will highlight any big issues and you can then take advice on what’s best to do within your budget. |

If you follow the list from Ianh and replace the fluids and talk to guy while he's doing his job and then pass a good old English MOT and have a nice small talk, too, you'll have most of the facts you're investigating for ...

Even though im a fairly decent and capable home mechanic with proper tools. There is only so much you can see/catch without ramps.
Given the mileage I do as well I send it in ti Gigglepin once or twice a year for a health check where I ask them to check over everything mechanical costs around £80 - £100 + parts when authorised to do so. Instagram @defender_ventures Empire Tuning - Agent |

Don’t forget that Makar ultimate service cost £10,000
A combination of a specialist proving an annual serice is best as they will be aware of common issues per the mileage of the vehicle and getting to know the owner and how they use the vehicle. After that grab a torch, pry bar and socket set, grease gun and do your own mid term checks. You can even write up you own check list and tick them off once every three months or whatever suits you. Also know your limits so do what you can and enjoy the process, then discuss with the garage what you can’t do and ask them to check those areas. Most specialist will be on the side of the competent home mechanic that cares rather that the person that does nothing from service to service as they won’t have the same mechanical sympathy. Probably worth noting that there are a few mechanical items where people rave about improvements when they're changed, but (unless you have access to lots of similar cars to drive) it's impossible to know if yours might need them replacing.
I'm thinking of injectors (see hank's thread - https://www.defender2.net/forum/topic53240-195.html) and the VCV https://www.defender2.net/forum/topic25121.html?highlight=vcv Both of jobs which I'll do at somepoint, on the hope of improvements, even though I don't have any real reason to think that my current ones are faulty. |

Thanks everyone, much appreciated. I'll get a local specialist to do a main service when I have the funds available. I've already done the VCV and had injector seals done last year, that's partly why I'm concerned that other things might be about to go (with no evidence to back that up), just because I've had a few issues recently. It's a confidence thing, I guess, I want someone in the know to say it's all good.
£10,000 for an ultimate service! I've give that one a miss.  |
