B2B chargers
B2B that is the question!

i have a national luna split charge relay and controller coupled to 2 Optima batteries
i have read that the B2B chargers are a big upgrade from the older relay solenoids.

Has anyone fitted a B2B on here?

If you did how do you monitor the battery levels? 2023 Defender L663 V8

When you say B2B are a big upgrade, I think it really depends on lots of factors. A split charge relay or even a simple combiner switch can be perfectly adequate it some cases and you may see limited or no benefit. It all comes down to type of useage and battery chemistry really. 2007 110 TDCi Station Wagon XS

from what i have read, the voltage solenoid will charge your battery to 80% but the B2B will fully charge to 100% and a lot faster.

i find on our expeditions if i park up for more than 2 days the Yellow Optima is down to 20% pretty much only the Engel running and an Led strip periodically, so the 20% extra would benefit me.

I'm not really impressed with the Optimas, i think i should have gone with Odyssey's 2023 Defender L663 V8

Assuming your 2 batteries are in good health, and "similar" then the alternator output will charge them to full just fine. The faster comment is interesting, as that depends on how big the DC to DC charger is. A good 30A output one is over £200, and even then I've seen my alternator put 60+A into my leisure battery when flat...

It might be worth you getting a Shunt or power meter for your current setup, see how many Ah you're actually putting into and taking out of your batteries as it is.

Follow up edit: If you have a vehicle with a smart alternator it's a completely different kettle of fish.

A smart alternator? Shocked what's one of those?

i have a red and yellow top Optima around 2 years old.

Good idea i could wire up my multimeter to take some readings Thumbs Up 2023 Defender L663 V8

Newer cars modulate the alternator output according to driving conditions to match load and improve economy/reduce emissions. In those cases you can't just strap a second battery in with a split charge.
