Stiff clutch
Hi guys,

Recently got my adventure 110 and it’s triggering an old knee injury. I have come across the LOF power spring, was just wondering if anyone has fitted one to a newer defender and what the results were? Did it make the clutch significantly lighter? Is it a ball ache to fit?

Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated

Thanks

Hi Parmstar. I have both the LOF Power spring and Power master cylinder and combined they are lighter than my Freelander 2. Worth every penny and usually there is a special on buying both of them together.

If that is too heavy for you still then there is the Red Booster servo clutch which is feather light. Thumbs Up

Thanks geobloke- will the spring on its own do the job or do you recommend just getting both the cylinder and spring?

Spring makes clutch a little easier, but not vastly.

Never tried it with the cylinder and the spring.

Just the spring is good but if I had to do it over again I would just go for both he spring and the master cylinder. The combination is superb even with a heavier LOF clutch. IF and when you do buy these make sure that you pop the sale cylinder out as well, check that it is moving freely and has a good amount of grease to keep it lubed. An un-lubed slave cylinder can make the clutch feel much heavier on its own.

The difference is that with the master and spring the clutch is light enough for my elderly mother to drive the 110 without struggling. Thumbs Up

Ordered the spring will have a go at fitting it - found another thread with some real nightmare stories about how much of a pain it is to fit. Key tips picked up on is to use a vice to compress the spring and use cable ties to hold the tension before fitting.

Wish me luck guys Shocked

Same knee issue, the LOF spring mod certainly made a noticeable difference to my 2011 Puma, albeit still heavier than the average car

Can’t be to difficult to fit as my local LR specialist in Cubbington did if FOC. Ride like you stole it!!
If I’m not on a bike it’s because only a 4x4 will do…

It is definitely easier with the pedal box out of the vehicle and if you’re doing the master cylinder the spring is just there to change too Wink Wink

thanks geo - I have decided to order the cylinder too.... complete novice so may be a task to tackle this, I may get a specialist to fit it as I will probably end up breaking something I'm not supposed to!

Anyone you can recommend in the Yorkshire region?

It can be a chew to fit the cylinder, but it’s well worth it. Mine is lighter than the wife’s car! Alpine restorations in Halifax have a good reputation, but to be honest if you’ve got a good local mechanic you trust they will have no problem fitting it.

Would be interested to see how you get on , on my 2009 Puma the spring didn't make much difference to pressure required but seemed to change the feel which I didnt like so had it removed, then went to add the LoF master cylinder when I had a new clutch fitted but couldn’t get the bite point sorted, spoke to LOF who were super helpful and said it is very tricky with new clutches on a Puma so abandoned the idea (also wondered what happens when you fit one and then add a clutch later)

Finally settled on a redbooster - which is very good but obviously more complex:expensive

As for Yorkshire based LR specialists my go to is RCM 4x4 in York (off A64 by the Shopping Outlet ) really know their stuff and passionate about the brand

I had the spring fitted to MY14 90 and to be honest I didn't notice any difference at all. A friend who has a 2009 Puma said he did but his didn't last that long and snapped so he fitted my original take out.

The only way I found to make the clutch lighter was with the LOF master cylinder, it wasn't earth shatteringly different but it was enough to notice the difference.

I think with the later models it also depends on the mileage done when changing out the spring... mine was very low mileage which is why I don't think I noticed the change.
