Yikes, what are you doing that you've broken two 2.2?

What Naks said. How have the previous ones failed? The BMW conversion is what I would do, or an LS3!!

Lots of Pumas fail. My 2.4 went at 70k even though I really pampered it, best oil, 6 month/6k services etc. The Ford lump is rubbish. I wish I had gone for the M57 but it wasn't really a thing at the time. It suits the Defender better than anything else. You really need to drive one to see the difference and how good the Defender could have been with the right engine.
Depending how long my new one lasts I'll either convert to an M57 or EV if feasible by then. WARNING. This post may contain sarcasm. |

First engine, may have been, at least partially, my fault. Second engine has been looked after, regular servicing, etc. Wife has been driving it recently, so maybe not as much mechanical sympathy and often quite short journeys, but it should be able to cope.
Thought about EV (and have an i3 which is great for nipping about town), but the range isn't really there yet for what we want the defender to do. I have another 110 with a V8, so while the LS3 is tempting, I don't really need two V8 110s. I'll investigate the BMW engine. Has anyone got any recommendations for who would be able to fit one in the south east? |

What fails on them for a matter of interest? Something serious like a big end failure, or something just silly expensive like the common rail injection? 2005 Td5 90 XS

I know the 2.4 had overheating issues in the beginning, but not sure about the 2.2.
Friend of mine had a 2.2 failure a few weeks ago, turns out there was a cracked piston with a hole in it as well. A dripping injector will usually destroy a piston like that.

My first one was traced to shonky injectors (although Land Rover refused to accept that conclusion), leading to a runaway. I had injectors tested and the one in the ruined cylinder had been massively overfueling.
Second one, misfire in cylinder two, wife stopped quite quickly (being scared of a potetntial runaway again). Oil thrown all over engine bay, yet to strip it down and find out cause, I'm guessing injectors again. Just had it serviced a week ago. |

Probably a stupid comment , but if pistons crack, not cheaper to sort whatever caused the piston to crack and replace pistons? Or there would be collateral damage to the cylinder that makes it uneconomic to repair? 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing

@Dinnu, not a stupid question at all.

Watching with interest. If/when the day comes that my 2.4 goes pop I would like to replace it with a modern 'performance diesel.
Originally I was thinking Cummins 6BT or Merc OM606 and even started collecting a few 6BT bits, but despite these engines being bombproof and responsive to tuning they're old mechanical tech where I think I would prefer a modern diesel in terms of ECU control, power delivery etc. M57 seems to be the 'go-to' engine in modern diesel swaps but why? Reliability? Tuneability? Later M57's (M57D30TU or M57D30TU2) make fair power in standard form but are expensive! These are Alu block. The older iron block M57's are comparable power wise the the standard 2.4 and 2.2 TDCi so seems a lot of effort for little gain? Given that Ford's Duratorq unit is generally very reliable used widely by Transits and London Taxi's for many many miles!! What about the merc equivalent like OM648 which makes a lot more power? What other modern largish capacity, powerful, reliable diesels are common in engine swaps? > 110 XS Double Cab |

Done a little more research and half answered my question... M57 to MT82 adapter plate is readily available at a reasonable price Alternatively M57 bolts straight up to the ZF S6-53 gearbox (often fitted together in BMW's) which is a lot stronger than MT82, then there are adaptors available to fit the standard LT230 transfer box. There are also all sorts of ancillaries readily available for the M57/Defender application... Mounts, hose adapters etc. I'm not saying OM648 can't be done, but M57 seems a lot more straightforward. With these disasters stories being caused by injectors, is it worth taking out the injectors and sending them for testing?
Maybe at 50,000 miles or something? |
