I'd start by checking the level of the fluid in the clutch reservoir. Darren

Mine was not crunching, but I could feel the clutch dragging. Especially when I engage first, clutch fully still fully depressed, the Defender wants to surge forward. Engaging reverse was not a pleasure either.
Replaced the oil in the gearbox.. very little improvement. Last action which seems to have made most improvement was adjusting the push rod on the clutch master cylinder. I think the rod was set too long when the master was replaced and there was no clearance between rod and piston, and caused the non return valve inside the master cylinder to not work as intended. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing 2012 90 CSW, 2.2TDCI, Santorini Black |

It may be “ normal” for this gearbox. I have found that most defender gearboxes require a slow technique to achieve a crunch free change between Ist and 2nd and 2nd and 3rd. Try a slight pause in neutral whilst changing these gears. Quick changes don’t seem to work in defenders.
Welcome to the odd world of defender ownership. |

Whilst I agree that these boxes respond better to a slower change than ordinary cars, they shouldn't crunch - particularly 2nd to 3rd. Darren

Just checked the reservoir and that’s okay. if you double clutch it it works fine could it be the synchromesh going ?

TDCi Defenders use the MT82 gearbox. If you google "MT82 Mustang" you will find a plethora of news stories about Mustang owners suing Ford over issues with the MT82 gearbox.
https://www.motortrend.com/news/2011-2019-...g-lawsuit/ https://fordauthority.com/2020/06/mustang-...n-lawsuit/ There are a few things you can do to improve the situation but you may be unlucky and have a crunchy one. See here for the JLR fix for poor shift quality https://www.defender2.net/forum/topic29132.html I have also read that it is imperative that the gearbox is filled with the correct volume of oil rather than filling it until it overtops the 'level plug' (which apparently is not a level plug at all) I also experienced good results from fitting a Shift-R (https://tmdtuning.com/shop/defender-short-shift-quick-shift/) > 110 XS Double Cab |

Check out this video from Britannica Restorations. It is well explained at about 08:00 into the video.

It's just "a thing they do". Mine has always done it on 2-3 change and most of the Pumas I have driven have some gearchange irritation, with the 3rd crunch being most common.
Relatively recently I found a way to stop it most of the time which is to do a little clockwise 'lever stir' down towards 4th before you go into 3rd, and I'm now much happier! --- 2006 Defender 110 SW 300Tdi • 2011 Ford Ranger XLT crewcab • 2015 Defender 110 Station Wagon Utility TDCi |
