For the old Defender it was originally to do with wheelbase, the new one it’s purely just a name. 24MY 90 D250 HSE, Tasman Blue

Basically the smaller number relates to a smaller (shorter) vehicle
The old Defender the number related to the wheelbase in inches, ie, 90, 110, 130, etc.... |

The old Defender 90 is actually 93” wheelbase.
