Off-road Adventures on YouTube has just posted this interesting video about all (there’s more than one!) data systems in New Defendef, he a,so explains why some cars don’t have the SIM slot in the lower dash but can still connect to the internet via in car apps

Hi Tim,

Thanks for the video. Very informative. My defender turned up this week and I love it. Unfortunately the dealer didn‘t advise me to tick the online option and has spent the past few days trying to convince me that the reason I can‘t play music on the spotify app is because I didn‘t receive an email from Tata to enable the esim.

Question: if I need the online option, is it retrofittable?

What if I wanted to connect the esim to a different network? I still have the nano sim that I was using in the Velar I traded in and the subscription still has a year to run. Is there any way I can get the esim data and activate it through this alternate network?

This is a different system to the Velar infotainment system so you shouldn’t need the SIM as JLR has included the 2nd eSIM for the entertainment and Nav - my understanding is that the 3rd SIM, the NanoSIM, is for data over the WiFi Hotspot. You will only be able to use Spotify by connecting the cable to the phone and car and using the mirroring for your phone - Apple Car Play or Android Auto. I don’t use Spotify so I don’t know how you connect to it. I rarely use any form of streaming in the car as we have a good selection of radio stations around here that are on DAB and FM and the mobile phone signals aren’t great, I have 4G via O2 on my phone - 1 bar but the car’s eSIM shows that the network used by that is full strength O2 which I cannot figure out as the we are using the same network!
As far as I’m aware retro-fitting the SIM holder and modem would be expensive and possibly difficult to integrate hence why it’s only offered as a factory option not a dealer fitted option. You might have to pay a visit to a 3rd party car audio specialist for advice as it may be possible to fit a 3rd party unintegrated system. Pangea Green D250 90 HSE with Air Suspension, Off-road Pack, Towing Pack, Black Contrast roof , rear recovery eyes, Front bash plate, Classic flaps all round, extended wheel arch kit and a few bits from PowerfulUK Expel Clear Gloss PPF to come

Thanks Tim,

Yeah, a bit dissapointing. I‘m probably better off getting a wireless car play dongle and playing direct from the phone!

I just thought giving my current network provider the esim details would allow them to activate it on the current account and I could then throw away the nano sim. This is something that might need to be available in three years when warranties start running out and people want the choice of which network they want to subscribe to!

All that tech but you still have to use a cable to play music from your phone? WARNING.

The update is apparently being staged - mine downloaded and installed this morning so I’m now running update 2.04 software. Before it will instal you may have to drive a short distance as I was waiting all week for it to appear and this morning I went to the next village, when I stopped there no notification but when I switched off the ignition on getting back home I had a notification on the screen that the download was ready to instal and to lock the car. Takes around 40 minutes to instal it but you don’t need to have the engine running, just lock the car to start the installation. Pangea Green D250 90 HSE with Air Suspension, Off-road Pack, Towing Pack, Black Contrast roof , rear recovery eyes, Front bash plate, Classic flaps all round, extended wheel arch kit and a few bits from PowerfulUK Expel Clear Gloss PPF to come

So I tried all the reset tricks from Philm's post and nothing changed Sad

I only have a couple of issues and I don't know if they are data related or not.

Video link to show what I mean.

Hi all,

I'm struggling to get my First Edition to update the software...I'm still on V2.03. Can't seem to get it to update.

Strangely - even though I have the first edition and the Online pack with data plan - I don’t see the Land Rover hotspot option - which was there initially.

Any ideas how to get to get this to update?

I’ve tried a hard reset on pivi pro (hold power button ~15seconds).

However didn’t work.

It’s possible that LR are sending it out to groups of cars as my update arrived 10 days after Powerfukuk’s failed attempts. At first it wouldn’t install but on Simon;s advice I went for a drive and when I switched off the engine I got the little blue dot on the head and shoulders icon in the top right of the home page, which I tapped and the update was ready to install which it did fine after I locked the car and left it for an hour as instructed on the screen.

I learned today that my disappeared weather app on the “All” screen could be brought back by doing a “connectivity reset” from the connectivity screen.

So it maybe that JLR hasn’t sent it out to your VIN group - just keep an eye for that little blue dot on the icon on the top right of the Home Screen that indicates an upgrade messsge is in the system Pangea Green D250 90 HSE with Air Suspension, Off-road Pack, Towing Pack, Black Contrast roof , rear recovery eyes, Front bash plate, Classic flaps all round, extended wheel arch kit and a few bits from PowerfulUK Expel Clear Gloss PPF to come

Updates are pushed to the cars in batches.

For the navigation commands, apparently some vehicles have the language set to a choice which is not installed which results in no voice instructions. I’ve seen this solved when people have been instructed to ensure the test interface and voice commands are both set to the correct languages.

Hi Retroanaconda,

What do you mean by 'test interface'? Defender 2020 P400 HSE All Black

Apologies, that should read ‘text interface’. Meaning the language of all the menus etc.

I took the car to the dealer today and talked them through the issues (No Spotify and no voice navigation).

We then went to another Defender on their forecourt and I created a profile with my InControl account. Spotify appeared and had all my content. The voice navigation also worked. I then deleted the profile and returned to my car.

Excitingly, there was a blue dot on my profile icon. The system performed a live app software update and suddenly Spotify was available Smile. Unfortunately the voice navigation had not changed.

I have the feeling that entering my account details on another car somehow pushed the system to recognise the software update need on my car. It all happened in the space of 10 minutes and I have been living with the problem for 2 weeks.
