Hi guys,
Reaching out here to any members based in Eire or NI. Like many I'm sure, my wife and I have been double-jabbed, and are looking to holiday options this year. Foreign travel (flights, resorts, sunshine) seem too 'iffy' so we're looking to use the Defender and roof tent. Staying in Scotland is unattractive - every campsite I've seen has been jammed with staycation folks. We have a house we can use on Lewis - but the ferries are also jammed solid. So - looking at a trip to Ireland. Rough plan would be to arrive via Larne ca. 28th July leave via Rosslare about 10 days later. We've checked out all the official government guidance etc, and seem good on that score. But - all the stuff I've seen online suggests that vehicle-based 'wild camping' is frowned upon; and all the campsites are busy and require booking (something that doesn't sit well with a 'random routes' road-trip). We're not strangers to Ireland; I've been over a couple of times for work, but have also had 3 car-based trips in the past (Larne, Donegal, Tipperary, Wicklow, Larne was one; Larne - Baltimore & Ballinskellig was another; and a third was campervan based - Ballycastle to Dungloe and back) But this was all pre-Covid. Can anyone comment on the situation this year? I'm OK with campsites, but less so with busy ones with noisy kids and dogs. We'd be happy and equipped to wild camp sensibly; therefore happy also with any really basic camspites. Would appreciate any advice here. Thanks very much indeed for the kind offer. In fact we're 'sorted' in that regard - my sister in law lives in Dumfries itself, so makes for a relatively easy stop-off along the way. Still a surprisingly long run out to the ferry, but better than doing it all at once.
