Vacuum pump failed. Think itβs a known issue although thought they had all failed by now.

Having recently replaced my brake servo vacuum hose I came to realise that the sole purpose of the vacuum pump is provision of vacuum for the brake servo...
What I don't understand is why the vacuum pump is required at all? Why does the servo not take vacuum from the engine inlet like conventional vehicles? Of course after after the turbo the system is under pressure, but could vacuum not be drawn pre turbo? Obviously the answer is no else there would be no requirement for a vacuum pump! Just curious for my own understanding > 110 XS Double Cab |

For petrol engines yes, because petrol need to control the air to maintain the air/fuel ratio. Controlling air flow creates vacuum at inlet.
On a diesel, the air/fuel ratio is not important, and so there is no need to control air, and hence no vacuum at inlet (unless filter is seriously blocked). Having said that, modern diesels have something similar to petrol throttle body, but that is related to emissions control (and helps in smooth shutting down of the engine - no air, no compression). 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing 2012 90 CSW, 2.2TDCI, Santorini Black |

Diesels don't produce enough vaccim as they are unthrottled. Some more modern diesels do have a throttle, but I don't know if that does away with the need for a pump. 2007 110 TDCi Station Wagon XS
