Gents, followup to Recall Action P047/048, also discussed: https://www.defender2.net/forum/topic33029-180.html I got a Discovery 1, 1994 or later front axle tube, as much cheaper than trying to get the brackets done by JLR.
One thing I like to do to this axle is covert it from the banjo to the push fit breather connection, FTC5085. Probably some would argue why, cause the banjo design is so much better, but I like to keep it true to its design . Wondering if anyone has done this before, and if it was just a matter of widening the existing breather thread to accept (which seems to be a press fit installation) FTC5085. Or if the push fit adaptor will fall through the existing breather threaded hole. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing 2012 90 CSW, 2.2TDCI, Santorini Black |

FTC5085 is a hateful thing IMO, you are far better off fitting a 90 degree push fit union of the appropriate thread such as this - ebay.co.uk/itm/133168923086
As for fitting size, the replacement axle casing you have should be 1/8 BSP, the Puma axle casings have an unthreaded hole of approx. 10mm. On my post 2002 110/130 rear axle casing I chose to enlarge this to 11.8mm and tapped a 1/4 BSP thread for which there are many hydraulic/pneumatic fittings. I believe I opted for 6mm hose to match that of the original. 1985 127 V8 Build Thread Series 2 109" Series 1 80" |

Apologies Dinnu, I think I may have confused matters somewhat.
The push fit pneumatic fittings are on the whole excellent in my experience and I would have no concern fitting the 90 degree adaptor I linked above to any axle casings in the future. In fact, I'm using the same push fit connectors on my gearbox and transferbox for simplicity. You can see them in this photo: Click image to enlarge My dislike for the LR fitted FTC5085 is due to the routing of the breather hose, it exits the casing vertically before bending back towards the casing making it susceptible to being ripped out. The retaining mechanism is also rather poor and can work loose. Thanks Shroppy, That clarifies a lot. I do not use the Defender as it should be used, so not too worried about being ripped out.
Edit. And that TC looks beatiful.. as the rest of the Cummins/130 build Been in a Dodge 3500 Cummins powered that sounded fantastic. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing 2012 90 CSW, 2.2TDCI, Santorini Black |

I have to say that I don't like the standard Puma axle fittings, and I believe that one cost me an ATB when it leaked (I have a raised breather but still managed to get a rear axle full of muddy water).
I have no problem with the standard industrial push-fit fittings (the kind which usually have a blue plastic collar) especially when fitted with the optional locking clips, but it is the security and leak-worthiness of the standard fitting in the axle tube which I don't like. Tapping my axle tubes to take threaded fittings is near the top of my "to do" list. It is one area where "value engineering" has definitely reduced the quality of the product - the old screw fittings were better. |

Hmmm, food for thought.
The axle case came with the banjo fitting including the complete breather pipe.. so then might as well let the banjo stay. It is just that I like originality, and the look of being untampered/unmolested, although the axle prefix number will still give away that it was under a Discovery once upon a time But I will have peace of mind that no hubs will part. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing 2012 90 CSW, 2.2TDCI, Santorini Black |

Thanks Dinnu, the gearbox and transferbox have been a labour of love!
Click image to enlarge Think you may have me confused with Stuart, my 130 build is the V8 one, though I really must update the thread! 1985 127 V8 Build Thread Series 2 109" Series 1 80" |
