How far can side steps stick out from the side of a Defender
I am looking to make some side steps to go with some rock sliders I am making. How far can these stick out from the side of the vehicle measured from the flat side panel/door?

These will be removable so I would not use them as tree sliders - just steps in and car par protection!

I know their is something about nothing can stick out further than wing mirrors, but they are adjustable and I don't want to fall foul of the law.

Hints and tips on what can and cant be done would also be appreciated.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Mick

Side steps (unlike things like mirrors) are considered part of the vehicle structure and therefore the legal limit would be that the overall width over the steps could not exceed 2.55 metres. Provided that this is the case, it doesn't matter how far out they protrude from the doors. According to Wikipedia a standard classic Defender is 1.79 metres wide (it doesn't specify where this is measured though) so in theory you could have steps that were 38cm wider on each side than the current vehicle.

This would however undoubtedly cause a problem with lighting, since the obligatory lighting on the vehicle (headlights, side/tail lights, etc) must be within a certain distance of the sides of the vehicle. If you put wide steps on the vehicle you may have to move some of the lights outwards.

On a practical note if they stick out too much (I'd say more than a couple of inches wider than the wheel-arch flares) you will run a risk of scraping thing on them, and other people will tend to run in to them.
