Hello,
I had a problem with the clutch switch (revs were hanging on gear change) so I changed it and the problem went away. About two weeks on and I have another intermittent problem that's getting worse, it suddenly won't rev past about 2500 rpm. This morning I had a new development where it just wouldn't rev, foot flat to the floor and it sat at tick over and that was it. Anti-stall still worked so I was able to limp it to the side of the road and shut it down. On restart it ran fine for a while before the rev-limit problem came back. That then cleared and I drove home. It's now too bad to drive more than around the block so I need your help! Things I've already tried:
Because it runs OK for some of the time I'm pretty sure it's a sensor problem but there are no warning lights. Do you need to reset any error messages when changing the clutch switch because it seems to have got a lot worse since then. Any suggestions are greatly received. (Just by way of a semi-rant the car has been totally brilliant for most of the ten years we've had it, it got us to the hospital recently when a relative was in the final stages of life, got us home when it was pissing oil all over the place and got my two dogs to the vets when they were in need of urgent, life saving care. But it's picked it's moment on this one, we're totally out of money! But I still love it.) |

Is that limp mode! Well it's no fun at all. I haven't got a diagnostic tool so don't know what it's trying to tell me. It could be a hose, I've had the inlet (from intercooler to inlet manifold) fail so they must all be getting to that stage where they split. I'll check later when the weather has cooled off.
Thanks. |

Can you source another throttle assembly to try? Cheers

jst, no. All I have is hammers and tape.
It's peeing down with rain so no work on the car today, I'll draw up a list of things to check for tomorrow. I really dislike those star allen key type bolts, they're just annoying (as I haven't got tools for them). |

There seems to be a theme across the forum that people fix one problem and it creates another. As Blackwolf says check your pipes do not come loose or have cracked when they were disturbed.
Grab a diagnostic tool or pop by your local garage. Most love Defenders enough to give you a free diagnostic reading. Without that, you're in danger of just randomly replacing parts hoping to solve the issue. Good luck |

I think you're totally right, I've just read the Nanocom manual and the likelihood of randomly getting the right sensor out of all the sensors and readings it's taking is extremely small. I'll have a chat with my local mechanic in the morning.

The only fault was Glow Plug Relay. I'm just reading about it, it can actually cause limp mode to activate (according to the transit people). I'll read some more and order one, they're not much money so worth a try. I've had a prod around the lower turbo hose and it's as flimsy as heck but I can't find an obvious split. Mechanic said to take it off and actually look at it, if I'm going to do that I'll order a new one to put back.
I'm sure it can't be this easy but fingers crossed! Thanks people. |

Change the VCV unless you already have? No Guts, No Glory.

I haven't and I've just read a nine page thread about them, it certainly sounds like that could be the problem. Better order one of them too.

I reduction in power in 6th is a key give away as is a rough idle when stone cold in winter.
The reduction in power is minimal over time and hardly noticeable though. If it is that, when the VCV is changed you’ll notice a definite increase in availed power across all gears especially higher end. Mine started out like how yours is then moved on many months later to randomly cutting out when cold. I had it once pulling out onto a 50mph round then a quarter mile down same road at a roundabout. At that point I went straight home, knew it’s not safe to drive it got a new VCV and it was sorted. Failed clutch switch tends to give a power surge once into gear and odd behaviour during gear changes. VCV tends to be power related, I think mine was finished off with som emojis true in some fuel I got once from a certain fuel station I won’t use again. PF Jones is the place to go, they aren’t expensive or difficult to change. Mine came in a genuine Nissan parts box as it’s fairly generic, been great since really powerful. Over a period of time you don’t notice until it’s put back. No Guts, No Glory. 🇬🇧🏴🏴🏴🇮🇪🇺🇸⛽️🛢️⚙️🧰💪 |

Morning, first stupid question of the day (Haynes manual is especially useless on this), is that the VCV valve, just next to the high pressure fuel pipe and below the inlet manifold? I've undone the bolts and suddenly panicked that I don't even know if I'm undoing the right thing.

Ok, ignore that. The new part has arrived so I can compare. Stay tuned for more daft questions!
