United Kingdom 2013 Defender 110 Puma 2.2 CSW Barolo Black
2013 2.2 Puma 110 Little End
Hi all, and thanks in advance for any help you can give.

We've owned a Defender 110, 63 plate from new and done around 65k miles in it. Servicing was always done on time initially, we've let it slip a little recently and it hasn't been done for about 2.5 years, about 8 months of which it's been sat unused, until I started using it about 2 months ago.

Driving along the other night, hideous knock coming from the engine that i initially thought was a chuffing or chugging noise, so immediately thought intercooler/hose issue. Booked in with the garage the next day, took it in and sound just got worse and worse on the drive in. Pulled up to the garage and the chaps there didn't even need to look at it before diagnosing it with a failed little end bearing.

Sump off, confirmed little end bearing failure, bits of metal in the oil. The garage are saying engines Censored , replacement best option. Quote of over £5.5k.

What i want to know is, is this normal? The garage have said they've seen 3 little end bearing failures in as many weeks on the same engine. I'm just struggling to get my head around the fact that a vehicle could do that after 65000 miles! Also looking for some reassurance on the quote. The garage have been fantastic so far, and are a Defender specialist etc. I just want to get some advice before having to bite the bullet.

Thanks

How many miles did you do in year 2, and was there at least the right level of oil in it?

Engine oil is hydroscopic, so you might get away with a few thousand miles, but do 18,000 in year 2 having skipped the year 1 service, then leave it to stand in that oil for 8 months.... Not good.

Yeah the level of oil was correct, however it wasn’t in the best state when the sump came off. It’s a family vehicle that been passed around a little recently and some miscommunication regarding when it was serviced has got us to this point.

I suppose my main question is does the cost seem fair?

Thanks for your reply

Sorry wasn't meaning to be negative. These things happen. It's pot luck really you could do that and be fine or you could have an engine at the edge of a set of tolerances for bearings and not be.

£5.5k sounds much like a crate engine less ancillaries direct from land rover. I'll let others confirm the cost, but there are other ways to do it. If it's little ends that have failed and you need a new short engine the block is the same as a 2.2 transit.

Plenty of those around. Though does mean it's a bit more complex than just accepting the quote. The new engine will likely be warranted for a short period too to offset the worry?

Don’t worry, I’m fully aware that we’ve been silly to not have it serviced and we have to accept the consequences! But yeah we feel pretty unlucky too Big Cry

5.5k was total cost inclusive of labour. I believe they were quoting the engine alone for around 3.5 +VAT. This being for a 45k mile takeout engine. I haven’t had quotes from anywhere else. I just want to make sure I’m paying a fair price for what needs doing. I’ve asked them the question about the warranty too.

Thanks again,

This sounds terrible on such a new engine, but can't comment if normal or expected.

If it helps L R Motors (Twisted) have a 2015 2.2 TDCI COMPLETE ENGINE 45,000 MILES
£2,950.00 inc VAT.

It might be worth speaking to D T Engines or 4x4 Fabrications who do numerous LS3 swaps to see if they have any take out engines?

Good luck! A lesson for us all!! James

Not a common fault by any means, how sure is the garage that the fragments and noise are small end not something else? I haven't heard of it being common in Transits, either. I don't really see that your maintenance regime would cause this, it may be coincidental.

Either way noises plus debris in the sump are likely to be terminal, I'm afraid. Swapping out a complete engine should be about one man-day in labour I would estimate, certainly no more than two.

If it was me I would be entertaining alternative transplants around that price not that I can suggest a specific one.
If you don't require a diesel for range, efficiency or drive style a v8 upgrade would be something I would consider in your shoes. Probably further costs for ancillaries.
Personally I would remain averse to an auto on and require the range a diesel affords given where I live.
I would question buying a replacement for like for this evidently single use disposable engine
